cult of the eyeless***spoiler***

I cannot figure out how to complete the cult of the eyeless quest. I've talked to the cult members, and i'm supposed to go find the rod of whatever, and i've talked to the outcasts, who also want me to find the piece of the rod so i can destroy the eyeless beholder. I've gone down the staircase, answered the questions to restore the bridge, and have talked to all of the guardians, gone into the temple, rumbled with the beast, come back out, and asked everyone why i can't kill the thing, and the best answer i got was from the guy standing the furthest southwest from the temple, about how i can't fight hate with hate, but i have to heal the pain. Also, i can't figure out what the key that the head priest guy gave to me is for. It doesn't seem to opend the door back in the main part of the Athtkala sewers, and i don't think it was needed to enter the mage's estate. did i need it to go down staris or somthing? what's the story? a little help here would be appreciated.

Well, do you remember when you met Keldorn (the Paladin) and entered the next room after that?
There's a door to the left, where you had to go right to meet Gaal (It's marked as "inner chambers" on your map).
The key is for that door.

You have to "heal" the beast.

Err... if you're already there, you used the key already.

As Bill26 said, you have to heal the 'empherical manifistation(sp?)' - if you don't have any healing spells left, there are two scrolls in the container on the raised platform inside the temple.
