I've hit guys in self defence. Direct attacks like muggings - no drunken brawls. Never hit a woman or child since I was a child (every kid hits their bro/sis don't they )

I believe it's ok for me to hit only in self defence and stop as soon as the threat is over. However, even in self defence I would only hit a woman if it was the only way to avoid being killed or seriously injured. I'd hit a guy back if he just punched me, but I'd try and get away from a woman or stop her in some other way if she was hitting me.

My ex-wife broke my nose, once, and that's one of the reasons that she is my ex. I was trying to block her, and was succeeding, when she got me with a left hook. But, no, Melusine, I did not hit her back, and never did. I got into fights in junior high, like most kids, but never since then. As for kids, a quick spat if they aren't responding is all that I would condone, as "Time-Out" worked well with Carson, er, Piestrider, and is working on Will.

I think i shoudl add my own view on self defence

1) Gender doesn't matter. I have seen a 5'4" woman floor an 18-stone brick shithouse (pardon language) with one punch

2) locking/holding is all well and good if no other opponents are there. I will take people down quickly. it may be painful, it may involve hospitalisation but they will live and fight will be stopped

I do occasionally feel so angry with certain people I feel sorely tempted to smash their face in. Mainly arrogant and prejudiced people. But I reflect on the likely consequences and in the end I hold back.

It was because I had to put up with too many such people in my previous job that I quit. And now I'm still hunting for another job...

Learned a wee bit of Tae Kwon Do many years back, BTW. It's all forgotten now. Though I remember the instructor being surprised at how fast my kicks were.

If you want to learn faster kicks, I highly recommend Thai Kick Boxing (I can kick someone's head while standing 4 inches away) or Jun Fan Jeet Kunne Do (uses Tae Kwon Do kicks but a little more efficitently)

sorry that was off-topic folks

Good thread and no heat from this corner.
here are my thoughts.

1. Spanking kids is not only permissable but in some cases absolutely necessary.

2. Hitting in self defense is just fine and dandy, a pre-emptive strike may also be allowed.

3. One of my best relationships was with a woman who liked to punch me on the shoulder/arm or chest. She liked the fact that she could wail on me to her hearts content and that she could do no damage to me. It reassured her that I was probably a good defender and safeguard for her. I would constantly goad her knowing that with humor and jest I could get her to take a swing, it was also kind of a kick to know she could lay into me and I could just shrug off her best whacks Can I explain that whole thing with logic and rationale? Probably not but I love that woman a lot and she loves me.

4. People should not just go around hitting each other in anger without trying other solutions.

5. Should people be able to provoke someone to the very brink of madness and get away with it because "this person" should never hit "that person"? I think this may also be one of the larger causes of domestic violence. People are not just governed by logic so if you pull the tigers tail you may want to beware of its teeth. (I wanted to add, that having had a physically violent spouse, I am of the opinion that women should not expect to remain inviolate if they choose to resort to physical violence. Chivalry dictates that the man should take the blow and not return it..but when the cajones get kicked, thoughts of chivalry tend to fly out the window.)

One last thought, should we become a race that is afraid of a little physical violence? Or should we strive to be strong in all ways? Should we all be meak and timid and unaccustomed to physical side of our animal nature?

Not so bad Mel, i just had "een bord voor mijn kop", and it took me some time to get it out of the way. I see much more clearly now.

Sounds a lot like my situation with my ex. In my case I did eventually end up striking her. Im not proud of that, and I have never hit another woman. I managed to block all her punches but didnt pay enough attention to her feet....she nailed Big Jim and the twins and broke my little finger (a late attempt to block). I dont like the fact that I hit her, but I have to admit that in the same situation I would probably do it again. Err Time outs never seemed to work on my kids...they are rather stubborn.
