For all you know, the US might just have been drawing upon such sources of arcane knowledge behind locked doors. Maybe they kidnapped some members of this advanced race/civilization and forced them to reveal their knowledge.

And maybe there are highly advanced scientific treatises hidden away in the vaults of Glastonbury, still too difficult for us to understand yet... (The Excalibur might have been a lightsaber... )

They say that an ancient civilization had the cure for cancer! Do you think this could be true?

---by the way I was spending all that time trying to find that civilization's name and origin, but i couldn't find anything ---

If everything had to have a point to it, this message board wouldn't be here.

For those who don't know, Atlantis has been found, the city was located on a series of islands surrounding a volcano which was mostly dormant during the time of their existence. The place was situated directly between southern tip of India and Greece in the middle of the water out there, untouched except by trad. They constructed buildings that were as high as six stories, quite an accomplishment for that time period, there also were ancient murals found depicting all sorts of unique myth and folklore unlike any other place on Earth. So we have found the island which was spoken about by Plato, and we know that it was probably destroyed by the volcano in the center errupting and covering the whole city in ash in a matter of seconds, making it lost forever, but not entirley sunken, just the central part. The outer rings of the islands have been excavated and these findings proven. Plato was correct, he just wasn't up to date on his Geography quite perfectly. Also: Around Cuba, some ancient cave dwellings were found with odd spiral shapped patterns lining the insides of them. Not much can be said about them right now due to Kastro holding them out, but I thought that that was an interesting find as well. As far as civilization more advanced than us: I think that if they existed, we would know about them by now, though the Glifs around the pyramids that look like a Ford, a Helicopter, a Rocketship, and a Flying Saucer do stand out as a: "uh... huh...?" in my book. Perhaps those need to be investigated more and we must unearth the spynx and go into the chambers which we know are down there to scope 'em out!

Many early civilizations had similar technologies and built similar structures (megalithic buildings, pyramids, etc). The two main theories as to why this is the case are "parallel development" and "diffusion". Ancient lost civilizations are the "logical" backing to the diffusion theory--the technology was centered in the lost culture, then when it was destroyed the survivors scattered all over the world, taking the technology with them.
One intriguing hypothesis I read speculated that Atlantis (for lack of a better name) could be buried under the Antarctic ice (several kilometers thick in places). The most compelling idea in this hypothesis is that the other continents are relatively equally accessible from Antarctica; Antarctic explorers could have easily visited all other continents.

It is generally accepted that ancient civilizations must have had some sort of technological knowledge which has been lost. The question about how the pyramids were built has still not been answered completely. Don't forget about the places in South America where the megaliths have 400-ton blocks at 12,000 feet (3.65 km) of altitude--even today that would be a nearly impossible feat. I won't go into a discourse about the hypothesis that these building might have been poured into place with a primitive "concrete" (which is just crushed rock, sand, lime, and water). The question of the blocks fitting so tightly that a playing card cannot be inserted between them has been answered--the blocks are held in place with metal pins; this, of course, creates another question--how were the metal pins put into the blocks? Did those ancient civilizations have mobile metal forges?

*whew* I did ramble on a bit, didn't I?

Well, there you go. Can't dismiss out of hand the possibility that ancient civilizations might have attained to a high level of scientific and technological knowhow.

I've also read of certain areas in India and/or Peru where ruins were located which showed unusually high levels of radiation; also found in those places were rocks or masonry which had been vitrified -- turned to glass. Now from what I've read, rock vitrification requires extremely high temperatures which can only be generated in nuclear reactions and not in chemical combustion. What could have happened -- a local small-scale nuclear war?

Just something to ponder on...

And don't mind me saying it, /)eathkiller; I do think Castro's pretty charismatic-looking.

You're talking about Thera right? That *isn't* exactly Atlantis. It was more of a bastard civilization of Mycenaen Greek and Minoan Cretan influence. It was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in some 2000 years BC, and did create some moderately distinctive artifact pieces but it wasn't exactly a Utopia. Atlantis, has NOT been found, and more than likely never will because it is simply does not exist ,at least not in the high-tech utopian sense that has modern-day science-fiction junkies wringing their hands. There may have been a settlement in the Meditteranean Bronze Age called Atlantis, and it may have been a particularly wealthy place, but if there was it was not the super-advanced holy-grail society sensationalized by 21st century dreamers. Indiana Jones movies have destroyed all objectivity in the masses it seems.
In terms of the great Egyptian and Mayan architecture: Slaves, thousands and thousands of expendable slaves. Work them to death in organized gangs. Granted, there were some pretty damn talented architects working during the heights of those civilizations, but there's no reason to jump to conclusions of super-advanced, 'magic' technology that has been lost to time. Yes they understood how to forge iron and bronze, yes they understood how to cut and carve large-scale masonry, yes they they had adept knowledge of mathematical geometry and architectural finesse, but they did not have magic lazer guns or battery-powered machines. And NO THEY DIDN'T HAVE NUKES!
