I'd been steadily amassing gold before I decided whether to splurge on the Astral Dominae or just kill the Don for it. Last time I looked, I had nearly 100,000 gold coins, and I'm sure every wandering monster on Dominus could hear me coming a mile away.

But yesterday, after an extended quest exploring the area south of Rapax Rift and later the caves in Mt Gigas, I decided knocking off the Don would be light work, yet a glance at my gold revealed the shocking truth! I had only 30,000! 8o

Where did 70,000 gold disappear to?! It took me bloody ages to scrooge my way to getting that stash, and now some no-good thief has made off with it...? The goodies I was going to buy from Bela!!! Aargh!

Does anyone know what might have happened? I do remember opening a trapped chest once with Philosopher's Bane. I have no idea what that did to me, but there was no noticeable effect. I don't suppose it eradicated my supply of coins, now did it? Or perhaps it was the Rattkin who I met on a bridge somewhere in the SE Wilderness (or somewhere like that!)

Help!

Tough luck man, I distinctly recall a thread where someone asserted that Philosopher's Bane turns most of your gold into lead or something else worthless, and I've been more careful around traps since then. And while I cannot confirm it from experience, I believe it since the name itself suggests the opposite of Philosopher's Stone, which turns base metal into gold. Maybe you have earlier saves prior to that trap?

He's right, when you trip a philosophers bane trap, it gives a innocuous little message saying most of your gold has been turned into lead, the other trap to watch out for is heatwave which breaks most of your potions.

Ah, so the mystery is revealed. Bugger. I do have a save before it happened, but that was many, many hours of play ago! I try not to reload constantly, so I took that one on the chin, not realising just what it had done! Ouch. Oh well, now that I've decided to keep RFS for the rest of the journey, and I won't be needing Saxx anymore, I'll pawn off all the instruments he'd amassed! I'm still hanging onto this giant silver nugget on the pretence that it might actually be useful, but it's looking more and more like it's just a shiny bauble that I can sell for much needed gold. (someone tell me I'm wrong!)

Hi krazykrok,

You might want to refrain from selling that giant piece of silver as it comes in quite handy a little later on. If its dragging your party down you may want to stash it somewhere.

On the philosophers bane note: I try not to save every 5 minutes but after getting hit with the heat wave curse (good bye 78 potions and 33 scrolls...ouch) I definately created a "trap" save.

You can try earning your money back by using the Alchemy skill to combine renewal potions.
