I have had it with XP!!!!
I have now lost my access to www.ironworksforum.com because of a missing framedll.dll file (that's what the message said anyway). Why was I able to access on Friday but not Saturday? Who knows. I am posting this at work (which is why I can access at all) but last Saturday night it stopped working all of a sudden. I could ping and tracert the IP address for www.ironworksforum.com but I could not do so for the domain name. After 40 mins with my ADSL provider the helpdesk person came to the conclusion that it was a Microsoft problem, not an ADSL problem. I think that XP only works effectively if you do a clean install. I might not be online for a while, until this problem gets fixed. |

MEMNOCH,like I mentioned above I also upgraded to win xp and the only problem I have is that my BG SOA display will not centre on my screen for me.Mildly frustrating.Have you looked at the other threads here? There are people all over here talking about various problems they are having with XP.Others are not having any problems?
There is a reason for that,a computer doesn,t just decide to be difficult for no apparent reason. The beauty of it is that it can be traced, located and dealt with if you have the knowledge to do so.Thankfully I have had no problems, when I do I usually find myself waiting 20+ minutes per call on the automated help line that is usually no help at all. Keep us posted on how you make out and good luck.

Whoah, I was thinking of upgrading to XP Pro (I get it free from uni ) from Win2K. I think I'll wait for a while as I'm not prepared to reinstall 15GB of stuff on my HD. I'm happy with 2K as it has NEVER yet crashed on me.
I agree with the above post....no offense intended, but I don't like it when people just grumble and moan about general problems that randomly appear and disappear....they should do some research and try to UNDERSTAND the problem...that's what I try to do .....I don't mean this to brag or anything, just to prove a point: I've never had to call any technical helplines in my life and I've always got every piece of hardware and software working that I wanted to, in my life...it just takes a bit of patience and a bit of research Sorry I can't give any specific info on XP but I haven't used it yet. The in-depth reviews I have read give favourable conclusions although yes it is more resource-hungry and there are a few annoying features like Product Activation that they have introduced. Oh and Mem, why do you use BlackIce when XP comes with a built-in firewall? Finally, although Dell might supply drivers, they are the most basic ones usually and you should always go to the manufacturer's site to get the latest and best drivers.

quote:PB, what type of pc do you have? Details...PB. If its an HP certain years they put the riptide rockwell sound card in them. You wont be able to connect to the internet either if it is.. sorry. The sound and modem card are together. I strongly recomend running the compatibility program. I was told there is an 80% failure rate on loading XP. When I tried doing it and couldnt...Best Buy gave me a full refund Good luck. (I do like XP thow, it screams!)

quote: If you are upgrading from 2K you won't have any problems whatsoever. XP is extremely similar to 2K, it just has some newer window dressing. As far as resources go, again, it is very similar to 2K. If you have the old 9x kernell, I think you should do a clean install, but with the 2K/NT kernell, an upgrade isn't that big a deal.

ME is good, I have had no problems with it (execpt like Memnoch i use ADSL and have been having trouble getting to IW- im using an old 56k Connection on a WinME laptop at the moment. Not what im used to. |
