Hello all,

My level 10 specialist mage (necromancer) seems unable to copy spells from the enchantment/charm school into his spell book. I know that necromancers school of opposition is illusion/phantasism (which I rarely use), but surely specialist mages don't have two schools of opposition. Is there any reason why he can't use enchantment spells??

Cheers.

In Icewind Dale, they do have 2 opposition schools. They don't mention that in the manual, but there it is. *sigh*

Sorry!

RTFM people. HoW made some changes to opposition schools. It's not unusual to have two oppositions schools at all. That's why specialist mages suck!
If you want to have it easier, don't install HOW and the "revised oppositions schools" will not take effect?
Also, if you make a high level specialist mage in IWD and copy spells into his book that would be considered "opposition" under HOW rules; then install HOW and import the mage, he will still be able to cast the spells he has written, even if they are of an oppositional school.

BTW, what kind of mage "rarely uses" illusion spells?! what about mirror image? that's the bread and butter of a combat mage's defence!

The "Bread and Butter of a combat mages defence" would be stoneskin IMHO. It's possible to obtain a blur effect using the shimmering sash. My mages never take the front line as that's the fighters job, so mage defence is the last of my worries.

Anyway thanks for the responses and although an extra spell per level is useful, 2 schools of opposition is too much to ask!!

It is, isn't it. They probably did that because the conjurer in IWD had no problems casting ALL spells. The opposite school was divination and because you couldn't find any divination spells over level 2, the conjurer could have all spells. That gave you a specialised mage with no restrictions as to what spells he could use. That's probably way they put two opposite schools in How.
