as i was finishing the game a while back it occured to me the the mavin sword is not even needed to finish the game! you can hit cet with the lich's staff after you recharge it in the black fire. if it is true that you can stack chests and crates and torrin, and climb up the cliff and go to brimloch, you would never need to do the dragon dungeon at all! is this true? has anyone tried to charge other weapons in the black fire? what happens?

As far as I know the Mavin Sword and the Lich's Staff are the only two weapons which can be charged in the Black Fire.

It sounds like it should be possible to skip dragon spire. Never heard of anyone who tried it though.

Yes, it's possible to finish the game without the Mavin Sword. Here's the sequence I just finished:

1) Crypt and the Signet Ring
2) Oracles
3) Use Torin for a boost up the side of the Dragon's Spire
4) Skull Castle and Staff of Death
5) Anephas' Shrine (he was disappointed that I didn't have the Sword but let me through anyway)
6) Collasium and the Three Tablets
7) The Pyramid and Cet

Total real-time: about 4 hours

Technically, Xignal, if you use my technique of climbing the wall at Brimloch Roon and tree-surfing over to the Lost Sea, you don't need to even complete Anephas' shrine...

Saz,

Agreed, I was just concerned that not getting Anephas' "blessing" to proceed might have affected me later in the Pyramid. Assuming not, then one should be able to cut about 20 minutes off the total time (30 minutes in the Shrine minus 10 minutes for successful tree-hopping and swimming).

BTW, I used a one-character party (lvl 47 Zenmaster) with nearly all stats maxed, AC of 23, and a Kerah's sword. Set spawn frequency to seldom, ran a lot, and used portal/teleport where appropriate.

Never saw Erathsmedor - not even in the Shire!

Perhaps an alternative might be to do the dragon spire, but then skip Skull Castle and Anephas Shrine? Might be a bit quicker even.
Anyone care to challenge Rick on his speed record?
