As far as what you find during the prelude, I believe it's class based. When I took a monk through, he found something like 25 Shuriken +1... not bad for lvl 2. Also, what items the trainers give you is based on class as well...

You'll find you get a much better price selling to vendors at the "lycanthropic merchant" in Chapter 2... until you install patch 1.21.
