Get a portable hard drive, cost like 150$ 200gb (Over here at least) and Norton Ghost. You can use it to zip up you whole hd and port it over to the laptop... and not only that, your system setup from the oldie can be set up on the new computer...

My friend did it and it took about half an hour...

ROFL, what are you on about? The cables have throughputs of 10Mbps or 100Mbps depending on the type and on your NIC. So take 10Mbps that's 1.25MB/s. Ok there is some protocol overhead maybe, let's say 1MB/s. So to transfer 1GB it's 1000 seconds, to transfer 100GB it's 100,000 seconds or 27 hours, but that's only with the slowest possible cable type. With the 100Mbps it's theoretically less than 3 hours.

I would also go the portable HD route. You will get alot more use out of one of these over the course of time. Not only are they great for making backups but also for grabbing files on the go. An I-Pod can do double-duty as one, but you'll get bigger, faster, and cheaper storage getting a dedicated portable drive.

Ross - true, but that's the cheapest and simplest solution, just leave it copying for 6 hours then, and you're done with 100GB. Mem might have less than 100GB anyway

Yes, but you don't have to sit there and do anything while it is ghosting your hard drive. A fast DVD burner may be able to pull in higher speeds, but then your stuck sitting there to change disks, move them to the other system and copy the information over again. Both of those processes are going to slow things down (a lot in my experience, I've generally found I can burn at ~500MB/min once all the overhead is taken care of) and chew up valuable time that could be spent doing something else if someone went the ethernet/USB cable route.

In the event that both of the computers have gigabit ethernet then it would take him about 20 minutes to copy his hard drive.

Go to pcmag.com and check out their latest information on "migration tools".

Hiram's got the current magazine and says there are about 30 ways to go about doing what you want. There's even a website where you can "send" all your information to yourself. (Meaning, treat it similar to an email attachment, send it to yourself from your old computer and "open" it when you get your new computer.)

He says burning the MP3's to CD is the best idea for those (since you can get sooooo many on a CD), but that ZIP drives are worthless, ultimately, for what you want.

But then, that's just one more opinion in a sea of opinions. He constantly keeps up with the newest technology for his job, so I trust his opinions more than most.

Oh...and I'm not sure why you guys are saying it would take hours to move content from one HD to another via a "home network". Hiram has done this three times now (when buying new computers at home) and it only takes about 10 minutes to transfer one entire HD content to another computer for us. But maybe it's something different he's doing. ? hmmm...

It depends on two things IMHO: how much stuff needs to be moved, and where's it going to be moved at.

If you're dealing with less than 3-4GB, burn a couple of CDs. If it's less than 20GB, burn a couple of DVDs. If it's more than that, an external hard drive can be a really, really good buddy...

However, if you're moving it while still in Oz, then just do it over a network connection. Turn off all power-saving features and screensavers, hook 'em up, and let the copy run all night if you need to.

If you're doing it once you're in Beantown, then you'll want to carry the data over with you. Note that I didn't say the programs -- grab the install disks for whatever you need.

Re the DVD writer thing, I do have a DVD burner, but I'm guessing it's not as easy as dragging my files from the original spot to the DVD drive? I've got DVD burning software like Nero, DVD Shrink, etc but I thought for basic copying you can use My Computer to burn to DVD?

What I mean is that it's not as easy as inserting a blank DVD in my DVD drive and then trying to drag files onto that drive via Windows Explorer or something...

that's sweet too, cos even though he's stating something blatantly obvious, he still adds "IMHO"

Lady- lol, what "he's doing different" is probably having a faster connection. My estimate was for the slowest possible network connection (the oldest legacy ethernet available today) for 100GB. As Seraph said, gigabit ethernet is 10 times as fast as 100Mbps again, so I'm sure he can do it in a matter of minutes if it's a small hard drive.

*overcome by the naive cuteness of some of the advice given in this thread*
