Solo Fighter
Hello, I've been playing this game for years and years and I always come back to it. Mods and such make it easier of course, but I've never had the stones to play tactics so i decided to give it a go.
I plan on making my first tactics/ascension game as a solo fighter (barbarian or berserker, haven't decided yet). With all the available special items I really believe it is possible and I'm hoping for some confirmation! My question is, has anyone ever completed the game as a solo fighter with tactics/ascension? (core, I don't think I could run a solo figher with insane without ripping my hair out) Also, i've played through ascension before with oversight before. I can see doing all the improved bosses but Sendai from oversight doesn't seem possible to me. I actually uninstalled improved sendai portion after I did it with my stacked party because I hated how it was more like improved army than improved sendai. I only ask if someone has because it would make it easier on my mind when I encounter situations that require thirty or a thousand reloads and just want to delete my save game. |

Re: Solo Fighter
Tom, it definitely sounds like a tall order....
I am a fighter fanatic, as far as the BG series goes, and feel like I have mastered alot of tactics for fighters, but I have not tried (or even imagined) soloing a fighter. Of course I am fond of "sword & shield" butt-kicking, but without some healing & buff back-ups, I dunno how frustrating it could be. Much less with tactics/ascension! Good luck brother

Re: Solo Fighter
I've gone a solo ascension with a fighter, and I can easily tell you that it's doable. Well, technically I went through as a Wizard Slayer, but let's not split hairs. You have to think tactically before every large battle you know is about to happen, and I would recomend going to sword and shield route, if not only to boost your AC, but to give you some MR.

Re: Solo Fighter
I guess it can be pretty hard to solo with a plain fighter..
I prefer a cavalier..it has some good kit bonuses..

Re: Solo Fighter
Ok, you have 3 choices:
1) Dwarf - battle rager - best warrior in the game hands down. Even more when importd from BG1 with tombs. reasons: - Using the Grand Mastery patch you can do 10 attacks per round ALL critical hits!!!!! [3 (main hand) + 1 (off hand) + 1 (gauntlets) x2 (haste) + "Critical Strike" = 10 Criticals Per Round! - dwarves have VERY high magic resist - 20 CON = highest HP of any character - 20 CON = regeneration (less useful at higher levels) - Crom Fayer = 25 strength - Axe of Unyielding = +5 and +2 AC - 18 Dex is more than enough - 19 Str and dual frost reaver and flame axe will carry you till you build that hammer! * you get most of all you get all the strength of a half orc but will resist many spells and their effects 2) Elf - fighter - specialise in long bows and quickswap long/two handed swords. This warrior is a close second for the best acher in the game. If you use GM mod then you have a machine gun of arrows and even if you don't it kicks butt! More importantly your melee ability and armor still rock alot. You should dice anything in close combat. The only thing you miss out on is the immunities and bonuses of bezerk (which become minute at the end of SOA) Completing BG1 and keeping the standard fighter kit gives DEX 20 and STR 19. Killer archer and swordsman. Only flaw of this is lower HP, but you kill before they get close so... 3) Half Orc - barbarian - dual wield weapons of your choice. Crom Fayer is a must in the off hand (25 STR). Main hand my favourite is long sword +5 . Also Flail of ages (But you cannot haste this!), celestial fury (for stun) and the other top end TOB weapons are considerable. A good choice at high levels. Half Orcs get 19 STR 18 DEX and 19 CON, making them the only real race suitable for barbarians, except dwarves which are less preferable. |

Re: Solo Fighter
Magic Resistance and Saving Throws are very, very different: Do NOT get them confused. Characters with very good Magic Resistance are the Monk, all 4 of the Paladins, and the Wizard Slayer->Thief Dual-class. None of those, however, actually fit the criterion of "Fighter," at least not through the whole game. Characters with the very best Saving Throws are the Paladins (again), and Dwarven and Halfling Fighters or Barbarians.
If you're playing with Tactics installed, though, MR and Saving Throws will frequently not be enough, the only thing that can save you is outright immunity. Keep a sharp eye out for items that grant immunity to things like Stun/Hold/Level Drain/Psionics/etc., and grab 'em when you can. There is no such thing as "best Warrior in the game, hands down." (If there were, it would likely be the Archer.) Regeneration from having a high Constitution is almost completely irrelevant in BG2. 18 DEX is just enough, really. You don't get another DEX-based AC boost until you hit 21. If you want to play a pure solo Fighter, then go all out and max all of your physical stats to the hilt. Frankly, you'd be much better off playing a Fighter/Mage/Thief or something like that, but I don't know if that falls within the boundaries of what you want to do. |

Re: Solo Fighter
Generally speaking the Wizard Slayer -> Thief dual class is probably one of the strongest classes based on Magic Resistance.
Once you get Use all Items with your thief levels, you have a fairly high Wizard Slayer weilding Carsomyr and having a MR over 100. |

Re: Solo Fighter
welcome to IW and no worries
the answer is, yes, completing with just one character peronally i've soloed the game a number of times including: F/M/T, monk, kensai->thief, cavalier, skald, archer, F/T people have soloed every class though for sure some things are harder but in some ways it's actually a bit easier |
