yorick, i did play cause of my mother kinda pushin me into it.. i enjoyed it for the most part, but i really thought i wasnt good enough.. i had hard times memorizing music and it got frustrated to see other pianists do better than me.. i wish i had kept up on it, but like most my age i wanted to finally stop and relax.. i do regret it cuz it did relax me, even if it was a chore to do so.. im 34 now and i do regret lots of things in my life... i think we kinda all do at some point...

Why don't you just pick it up for the pure relaxational enjoyment of it then? Trouble memorising pieces? Improvise. Make up your own. Let the piano be an expressive voice of your own. Not as good as others? Who cares? There's always someone better than you. You committed the cardinal racing sin of looking at those beside you instead of focussing on your own race. Comparing yourself to others is a tough thing in music.

It's not to late to get back into it. It's like riding a bike. All the stuff you learned is still there. A little bit of practice and it'd start coming back.

You needn't be a concert pianist or in a band either, but that's no reason not to play piano. That's the beauty of music. It serves a purpose for you even if you are the only one who benefits from your playing. I certainly wouldn't let your age deter you from picking it up again. Better than having regrets at 64 about how you didn't start playing relaxing improvisations when you were 34.

If I had a penny for every story of a person learning classical piano who gave up in discouragement I'd be a rich man. Alas. Well, all the best mate.

Weighted keyboards can be an option of course.

But whatever you do don't regret mate. If regret leads to change it's great, but if it only drags you down it's no good, yes?

I'm glad your kids will have the choice.

Peace Arion.
