How about Neil Young? He was a member of two of the most innovative and popular groups of their time. In the 60's with Buffalo Springfield, one of the first groups to have a strong country influence and in the 70's with CSNY. Since then he has made excellent music up to the present day. His work has influenced popular music, musicians and society from the 60 to the present. As a songwriter he has shown versatility and talent in myriad styles and his lyrics have always been some of the best in rock music. I saw him in 1967 and will see him again next month. More than 35 years of grat lyrics, music and rockin' make Neil the best.

If the criteria are longevity and $$$, Aerosmith cannot be left out. Unlike The Beatles and The Stones, which are great in their own right, Aerosmith is still playing, still relevent, and topping charts.

But that is hardly fair. Aerosmith is like the living dead They have certainly made some sort of deal with the devil How else can you explain Keith Richards?

When did Areosmith last have a #1 album? and did it contain a beetle cover again? I seem to remember the beatles #1 selling a few copies just recantly

The Stones have just toured Australia and are currantly touring the world and Paul Mcartney has just finished a world tour, don't know what happened to the rest of the band though.

The Beatles and Pink Floyd. But first and formost, it's gotta be Little Richard. He brought us screamin' rock n roll.

Erm... Do we really need to tell you what happened to the rest of the band? Drummer Ringo Starr is still messing around in the music Industry, occasionally releasing a new record and every now and then touring with his Ringo Starr All Star Band; George Harrison died of brain cancer in January 2002; and, well, I doubt I should to spell out what happened to John Lennon, because you most likely know what happened to him.

You Sure that credit doesnt go to a Mr Leo Fender... ? I thought Les Paul didnt really do much except after a lot of persuasion put his name to a Gibson Design

Uh....Nightstalker....the Rolling Stones are still touring also - and still selling out the venues they go to. They've alse been around about a decade longer than Aerosmith.

So the longevity award would have to go to the Rolling Stones...and that should definitely put them in the running for greatest band ever. Some of the kids in the audience of their concerts are the GRANDCHILDREN of kids who USED to go see them. Covering 3 generations is a hard record to beat. (BTW Rokenn, Keith Richards plays for the Rolling Stones, NOT Aerosmith )

Aerosmith deserves almost equal credit though - because they are one of the few bands (if not the ONLY band) to EVER have a successful "comeback" tour WITHOUT releasing a new album (the "Back in the Saddle" tour of the early 80's).

What can one say about the Beatle's that hasn't already been said. McCartney and Lennon are the greatest songwriting team in the history of Rock & Roll. More #1 songs than any other group or performer ever (and not likely to be topped).

Other extremely influential artists (in more recent history) are:

1) Michael Jackson - In the 1980's, he WAS the "King of Pop" and had a tremendous influence on almost every other artist at that time.

2) Prince - Not only is he a consummate performer in his own right, but he is an incredibly successful songwriter. He wrote several hit songs for other artists during the 80's also(Bangles, Sheena Easton, Sinead O'Connor, Chaka Khan to name a few).

3) Madonna - Opened the door for ALL the female performers that are successful today. Before Madonna came along, there was Pat Benetar and....and....well, that was about it (maybe Stevie Nicks too...can't remember when she left Fleetwood Mac).
