More from Bali. These young guys... their actions got me thinking about how young Australians fought in the World Wars and Vietnam. So far removed from my reality. Yet, thinking that young surfers such as this could be involved in an event linked to the WTC attacks just chills me.

It also got me thinking about the 'carefree' image of surfers. Given the atrocities and horrors in Bosnia, Israel and Rwanda for example, what acts would our 'carefree' surfers be driven to? Out of necessity, revenge, self-defense, hatred, fear?

Makes me wonder.....

So distressing. I have been to Kuta. I have seen many fellow Australians relaxing and partying. Senseless!

And of course the Balinese will bear a huge long term brunt....

This goose is trying to blame America. Right... America attacks Australia. Give me a break.

I've been to Kuta as well. Bali was such a lowkey cool place and all the locals were for the most part very cool aside from the odd money change scammer. It has tripped me out quite a bit that such a thing has happened there. It's a beautiful place.

EDIT>
I remember Kuta especially did seem like a virtual Australian province.

I've been to Bali three times (including my honeymoon!) and spent a couple of hours at the Sari club as well. That, along with the fact that my parents were in Bali at the time, has brought this whole terrorism thing much closer to my life than I feel comfortable with.

What these surfers did is truly heroic. I would like to say that I would do the same, but I'm just not certain that I would have the courage. I think my own safety along with my direct companions would be the main thing on my mind.

Does it matter how many Australians died in the bombing, except for the home front? *Many* people died, of all nationalities; that's what counts for the Global Community. I think the only media reporting about the exact number of Australian deaths was the Australian media itself, just like the British media focusses on British deaths and the Dutch news opened with (disgustingly enough, as if they couldn't bring the news with more respect to the other victims ) the news that "1 fellow Dutchie has been reported missing in Bali after a bombing".
According to my mother`s newsgroup, the Aussie media isn`t giving anywhere near the number of Australians who are known to have died, and apparently the foreign media has already given more exact figures than our own.
I`m just wondering if they could possibly be serious...

Actually, I've already edited out the estimates I gave; I realized those numbers were just rumours from right after it happened, I have no way of checking it so I can't back them up. However, look at this list, it may be what you're looking for.
