Anybody else bothered by the commercialization of LofR?

I've been looking forward to the Lord of the Rings movies ever since I heard they were going to be made. But I never considered the implications. If LotR becomes a mass market phenomenon, we'll be seeing the characters plastered all over the place. It's already starting, with that stupid Burger King add for those light up goblets with a characters face on them. What's next?

Also, in the previews, I think Gandalf doesn't look particularly Gandalfy. I guess my image of Gandalf comes from the animated movie of the Hobbit, as well as some artwork I downloaded, and he always looks more regal, with a fuller beard. Hopefully, I'll like him better once I see the movie.

It's a fact of film marketing that this happens, but if you don't agree with it just don't buy it! Though I agree that it's a shame they are more than likely to produce many tacky products

On a +point, at least they have re-published the books!!!

Personnaly I think Gandalf looks fine, but what about Arwen taking the place of other characters from the book? I think thta's so wrong, but that's the only complaint I have about the film....

Then start laughing real hard, and throw the book (LOTR all 3 in one) at people trying to steal your tickets,that book should be heavy enough to scare them... Hehe!

But surely the marketing of books is also commercialism.
Perhaps we should only enjoy something that is published by someone written out by hand and using a gestattener duplicator for distribution only to intimate friends and that never sees the light of day!
I don't particularly like LotR for the reason that most fantasy writers don't deviate from Tolkien's world - perhaps because piggybacking on a tried and tested classic guarantees some interest amongst Tolkien fans - this is commercialism too surely. Let's see something new happening, this stuff is getting stale IMHO.

I do not mind the commercialization so much. I seems that this will be a new way to introduce fantasy to a new age of gamers. People who would otherwise never look twice at a D&D novel or rpg. One can never find enough gamers.

If you look at it like that, everything is comercialism, event things such as teaching and the armed forces are marketed

But at least in the UK we don't pay VAT on books!

If you want fantasy stories which don't follow the "standard" route, just try many of the latest authors [BTW I'm sure you do ] such as Steven Erikson, James Barclay and Robin Hobbs

No, I'm not bothered by the commercialisation.
The characters are not as I imagine them
I do not have a need to see them everywhere I look
and I certainly don't want one in my house.

I simply don't buy the figures (though there's a set of full scale helmets from the film which look really cool and which I would buy if I had a broader hallway. Not because tehy are LOTR, but because they look good.

As to them popping up everywhere, I findthat not half as annoying as the Harry Potter merchandise, which is definately aimed at younger children and is seen everywhere you look.

But the hype will pass, after which the Lord of the Rings will revert back to being a classic, wonderful book that everyone should read.


Then again, I have a feeling we have not seen the worst of it here.

[img]smile.gif[/img] They are actually prety nice, the light up base is a removeable rubber shoe contraption, and the glass goblet is pretty darn solid.

I don't really mind the commercialism, since it is unavoidable anyway, but what really matters is all 3 films are done, and they are done Well!!! Finally! No more Rankin-Bass! WHOOHOO!

Now, I know they cut out Bombadil, and Glorfindel, but they had to remove some parts... I just want to see the Ents besieging Isengard so bad.... Im so excited
