Hey guys, I'm having my monthly computer problems again There's a .dat file on my harddisk and whatever I try, I cannot seem to delete it (and I want to!!!) , because "Someone is still using it". As far as I can see, there's no one or no program using it, so it's really beginning to bug me. Furthermore, I've tried a shredding program to chop it up, I've tried deleting it in DOS, to no avail. It's not an AVI file, so it's not that WinXP bug (I'm working with WinXP Pro). Help!!

Have you tried deleting the file in Safe Mode?
To get to safe mode press F8 when your computer is starting up and then select safe mode from the menu. Hope that helps.

Nono, .dat files are programs, video files are things like .mpeg or .avi or something

Technically, .dat files are data files of some sort. What's the name of it?
You might also try booting to a DOS prompt, which might let you remove it. Failing that, use a Startup disk to boot to your floppy drive, and you should be able to remove it then. You might also use task manager to kill whatever process is using it. Use some caution with that one, though...
