Hey everyone, it's me again.
I am playing another game of our little favorite one here, and upon reaching Mazzy Fentan in the Temple Ruins, I wasn't sure if I wanted to take her on or not. That's what this post is for, to see who thinks I should go with Valygar, or Mazzy. What happened, by mistake, is I tried checking her stats again and she went back to her home, no big deal though. I've played through the game with Valygar, but never with Mazzy. Some people think she's good... if you, the reader, think she is, please comment... I'd like to know why she's good. I have my Dwarf Berserker for my main fighter... he literally just kills everything. I'm curious of Mazzy's plot and everything, and whether or not it's worth it. I've seen Valygar through to the end in the Ascension... and he is very reliable, one of the best types of fighter characters, when equipped right, if you ask me. (I tried making this a poll, but I couldn't find where you make it one). Valygar wields katanas and such, as well as daggers if need be, and I normally train him two slots in Flail so he can use the Flail of the Ages. Mazzy, on the other hand, has a bunch of slots, 3 in Short Sword (which sucks, in my opinion), and short bow. So... who should I keep? And please, give good examples...

Mazzy Fenton excels in Archery. Give her the Tuigan Bow and arrows will literally swarm the air. If you have no need of an Archer, then stick with Valgar.
Note: Having Valgar and Mazzy together in the party sparks some interesting dialogue between them. |

Yes, Mazzy's a killer at long range. With the Tuigan Bow, she gets 5 (!!) shots per round, and a thac0 usually well into the negative numbers. Add improved haste to that... and I hope you stocked up on arrows! She can empty her quiver in 4 rounds! I have her in my party; she's great for disrupting (or outright killing) enemy casters. Up close she doesn't shine so brightly, but is still passable in a melee if given a good short sword. Her pseudo-paladin spells are also very helpful.
Valygar is pretty well the other side of the coin. Specialized in Katana and Dual-Wield, he can tear anything up that gets too close. But if you've had him before, I don't have to describe the sorts of carnage he can create with his family blade and, say, the Celestial Fury. Plus, he can backstab... ouch! So, who to choose? Well, depends on what you need in your party. If you have a dwarf berzerker, then you probably have melee all sewn up. Of course... you can always get both (unless the other four party members are indispensible).

I would take Mazzy
She can be both an archer (Turgian/Gesen bow)and a tank (if you have ToB installed you can go to Watchers Keep and buy (short) Sword of the Mask +4 - all the sword a halfling lass could want)

Mazziy is a fighter, meaning she can become Grandmaster in her weapons. Valigar can't.

I'm on my first run through the game, and I chose to use Mazzy over Valygar. I've been using her as a tank. She levels up quickly, so its no problem to get her up to grand mastery soon enough with the short sword. I have her using a short sword of backstabbing +3 b/c it is the best I've found so far, but she's also got a sword that allows her to mirror image...a nice option that I haven't really used much. I boosted her strength with the gauntlets of ogre power. I suppose its all in the way you decide to outfit them. I've placed all my focus on her for low AC and improved strength to make her tank#1. I would imagine that as the game progresses there will be many opportunities to beef her up even more. Currently She and Keldorn lead the way, and she has had to bail him out a time or two. The idea posted above about using her as an archer is a good one. I used that strategy at first, but once I got her a decent shield I decided to stick with the tank method. Another plus for her is her magic resistance. It's very rare for spells to take effect on her, although I think I also outfitted her with some anti-magic amulet. She also has the infinite book of spells with spell turning in a quick item slot. A pretty tough cookie.

The fact that Mazzy can wear full plate armour usually means i choose her over valygar (allthough i do have keldorn and minsc as melee fighters however) In ToB give her Tuigan bow, some Boots of speed and a quiver of plenty +2 and, well you can imagine!
