Apologies for the unoriginal title.
The aim of this thread is to compile a canon of highly regarded individuals and institutions completely unworthy of the praise lavished on them. Musicians, artists, directors/films, writers/books or other notables who's achievments don't quite match the esteem accorded to them. To start the ball rolling... Lord of the Rings - A overlong fairy story with the narrative structure of a drunk falling downstairs. Johannes Brahms - A composer popular with people who don't really like classical music but think that they should. Jackson Pollack - A man who randomly splashed paint on canvas. In Pollack's defence, it was quite an achievement that he hit the canvas at all in his advanced state of inebriation.

Will Ferrell. I can't stand him or his characters.

Adam Sandler - Praised for his comic skills although his movies remind me of what would be written by a 12 year old with a potty humour obsession.

Eric Clapton: Master of overproduced 2 grip guitar riffs.
Chris Rock/Chris Tucker: Loud is not the same as funny Ray Raymond: What dark powers he made a deal with so his show lasted as long as it did, we will never know... or want to know for that matter. Harry Knowles http://www.aintitcoolnews.com : It's said that moviecritics are people who want to be actors but don't have the talent for it, Harry is a man who wanted to be a moviecritic but didn't have the talent for it. |

ermm Lord of the Rings is the ORIGINAL fantasy story, sorry but over-rated it is not. Now Harry Potter on the other hand, while not horrible, definately gets more publicity than it's worth.

"Lord of the Rings is the ORIGINAL fantasy story" you say? (Sorry I don't know how to use the quote tools.)
I'm gonna have to disagree with that. A lot of Tolkien's stuff was pulled from Norse mythology. I think the Norse predate LOTR by quite a bit. They had elves, dragons, and dwarves, and giants to boot. Or are you saying that LOTR is the original fantasy story that was originally meant to be a fantasy story? (I know that sentence seems wrong, but I'm at a loss for better wording.) If that's what you're getting at, I'm more inclined to see your point.

That having been said, Lord of the Rings is certainly an incredible fantasy series that probably did birth an entire genre of writing - or at least boost its popularity significantly. But The Hobbit was the best book of them all. Nirvana (yes, the band) is overrated.

Halo - the most overrated game of all time. I love first person shooters and i seriously can't see what all the fuss is about this game.
It was pitched to me by my 16yo cousin who was quite taken by it's "amazing graphics", "original, gripping plot", "unique baddies" and "awesome weapons". So i bought the thing expecting slightly less than what he promised and was utterly disappointed. I realise now that he's not a FPS veteran...
