In BG2 they said 'Based on AD&D 2nd Edition rules', and ti was kind of a hodge-podge mix of 2nd edition with some 3rd edition classes. For NWN, are they going to go pretty much straight by the book 3rd edition rules?

Well, this has been a bone of contention for some people...the 3rd edition rule set is huge and they didn't have time to incorporate everything (even with over 4 years of development) so some of the feats and skills have been omitted. Anything to do with jumping, swimming, flying, and mounted riding is out. They also altered some of the abilities to make them easier to code and/or to balance out the fact that others are missing. Last I looked I think it was around 20 of the 40 skills that are in the game, with a couple added. They created a skill called parry because fighting defensively is out, and also a skill called discipline to counter attacks like knockdown and disarm. They altered the skill bluff, it is now called taunt and gives the opponent -2AC to everyone fighting him (as opposed to bluff which was specific to the rogue).

But the base rules are still 3ED and the classes are 3ED as well. Every slight change and ommission was given the official stamp of approval from Wizards of the Coast, who have the right to pull the license if they feel Bioware is veering too far from the official rules.

Hope this helps. Going from PnP to CRPG is similar to going from a book to a movie...you try to stay faithful to the original but inevitably the transition requires some changes.
