new to the game and stuck in the crypt

ok after you go down the broken stairs and enter the big room, i went down the stares and talked to the crypt keeper and got the crystal from the water and went back up the stair into the big room where you cant go any farther because of the broken stairs where you come down in the stragy guide says to use the crystal but i cant get it to work can someone tell me what im doing wrong?

Okay - as you are facing the broken stairs in that big room, turn to your left. There is a door way there. Examine the door JAM - not the door. You will find a depression that is the same shape as the crystal. Use the crystal on the depression and the door will open and lift will come to take you to new heights!

U have to USE the crystal and put the cursor on the lock recepticle.

There is a small niche on the side of the wall with the skeleton painted on it go there and look left.You should see the place where to put the crystal.In the big room I had problem with it too, later on (whole game in fact) I learned to use all my preception skills to look for that f***** levers, buttons and niches that are the same colour as the wall and its very hard to find them.Hope it helps
