1024 x 768, on a 15 " or 17" monitor,
1264 x 1024 on a 19" or higher.

But then, I can read small characters . Don't forget, though, that, roughly after hitting 40, a lot of people start to have sighting problems at short distance, and usually they don't want it to be known, so they won't wear glasses for a while, but they will go for lower screen resolutions ...

800x600
I haven't ever actually considered running at higher res...this works just spiffy for me.

800x600 most of the time. How's everything going Slackerboy? Nice page by the way.

I designed my site to be user friendly at 800x600 and up. Go to www.tgeweb.com and scroll down to the bottom, then click on that black and blue little icon box, and it shows stats for this site, you'll see what people use here to post, and surf. (Below is some of the stats)

1024x768 715765 43.21%
800x600 638439 38.54%
1280x1024 127170 7.67%
1152x864 85135 5.14%
640x480 43812 2.64%
Other 23521 1.42%
1600x1200 22336 1.34%

PS: look at that, 1280x1024 is ranked higher than people using 640x480! So I wouldn't cater to the 640 crowd.. BTW, the stats for this site aren't 100% correct.

Also, when creating your website, you could use percent's instead of actual pixels, so if you're at 800x600 it'll fit, and at higher resolutions it will stretch out to fit that size. I am doing that with my next web design layout for Ironworks.

Looking at your figures, Ziroc, I think that the percentages must differ GREATLY for the gaming community. Here, the median resolution would clearly be 1024 x 768. I would still advocate no less than 800 x 600 since that's almost 40%, but the standard recommendation of 640 x 480 used for e-commerce sites probably does not apply to our particular genre.

The Javascript method of determining the screen res and redirecting to the appropriate page is the best solution I can think of, and the one I'd recommend SB to use.

As a web designer, I do not recommend using the "relative sizing" method of using percentages, for more often than not they end up resizing your page in ways you did NOT want to occur. It's best to pick a lower res and use absolute pixel sizes on that.

Just so you know I wasn't talking out of my hat: here where I work at International Business School in Denton, 18 of our computers still have a maximum screen res of 640 x 480, 53 have a screen res of 800 x 600, and only 5 have screen res' of 1024 x 768 (all of them either faculty or staff, mine being one of those.)

Try posting something to this forum using a 640 x 480 computer screen. Hehe, can you say "Horizontal Scroll?" (I've done it, too!)

Cheers,

Oh, and just for the record, at home I run 1024 x 768 on a 17" monitor. I did have it set at 1280 x 1024 at one time, but it really hurt my eyes and I'm not getting any younger.

Cheers,
