Personally speaking, 98SE works fine for me. Just one thing, when I reinstall after a complete format, I always use the OEMSETUP rather than SETUP. Not entirely sure what the difference is, but I've never had any problems

98 is the most stable version of Windows. Not ME, ME = Bad. XP, possibly. But 98 is quite stable and compatible with almost all things, it runs very well for me.
what are you talking about ? I run me2000 for more than a year now and i never had any problems whatsoever.

Pure luck Johnny, pure luck. It was the worst, most unstable, piece of junk I have ever had as an O/S. Same thing on my dad's comp, he's running XP now and it's working a LOT better.

i know you're prob right about this, i've heard lots of complains from other people too, but maybe i was just lucky indeed. My bro never had any problems either btw. Anyway, i'm moving on to xp in a couple of weeks, i just hope it will run as smooth as ME did for me.

Be sure to get the right one of the two. At least that's what I hear.

I love it how tech help probs that are posted always end up being a thread about which version of Windoze is better , but that's prolly just me

I've been on XP professional for 6 months now and had no probs whatsoever I recommend it to anyone.

On the other hand, you could join the DARK SIDE....

Epona, I agree with Mouse. A clean install. And you are correct, Win98 is the only truly semi-stable thing they put out that is not based on NT. XP Pro is also a good option, very stable, but IS have some conflicts with weird 3rd-party products (joysticks, game controllers, remote controls, ets)
Funny thing, I DO run Windoze 98 on my Mac (The company has a proprietary piece of software that only runs on Win98 - not WinME, Win2K, or WinXP. JUST Win98. It is also the buggiest thing you ever saw) Since my Mac handles the hardware configs, I'm the only guy in the office who hasn't had to sit for hours on tech support. Now, I'm getting requests to print reports for some of my associates. And, some have asked me to take them to CompUSA to see about joining the DARK SIDE, and "Thinking Different"

Thanks folks! Well looks like I'll be on a disk hunt tonight then My study is just full of piles of disks and books, a real nightmare to find anything

One last thing, Epona...

This is a good opportunity for updating to the newest drivers for your hardware.
Hit the company websites, TUCOWS, or do a search on Google. It may be a silver lining

UM for some reason I had the same problems the past week even though I did not use the same virus check. I ran though all the same things you did to fix it. I finnaly had to refresh ( I think thi ssi the same as overwriting it yes?) my windows ME while doing so it discoverd some corrupted files. I did lose some of my BG Stuff and my isp data but i had it all back up on flopplies. Now it runs great.
