Many thanks to all my regular posters who took care of the board when I was unexpectedly missing this weekend.
We had a wind storm here on Friday which took out our internet connection and let two of the dogs out only to be caught by animal control. They had to cool their heels overnight as it was too late to bail them out Friday. We're still trying to make sure that the fence IS really escape proof but those dogs keep getting more and more clever! Glad to be back!! Wyv

Welcome back! If you want to protect your house from big lightning storms, then just set up a big metal post...

We really shouldn't get on the subject of my dogs - three of my dogs to be specific: Dodger, D'Arts and Presto.
First they found a weakness in the fence and went running. Hole Patched. The dogs broke the patch and went running. Hole repatched. Then the snow drifts made it easy to jump (or in some cases walk) over the fence and go running. Fence raised in high drift areas. Then they discovered that they could use the wooden posts that had been angled here and there between the uprights (these actually served no purpose and I have NO idea why they were installed) like a ladder and went running. Posts were removed. And they went running. All posts had NOT been removed as I had been told they had. And they went running. Posts removed, fence checked. Two dogs were allowed out when I specifically said to try it with only one. Tree fell on fence during that wind storm. And the dogs went running. Fallen tree cut up, fence repaired. The three dogs are supposed to be: 1 on the line, one free and one in the house. I let the one on the line off when we went down to the gate to get BJ from the bus so that was 2 dogs free. Gave the dogs their "afternoonies" and thought I would be checking on them again in about 10 - 15 minutes. Got caught up in yet more email. And the dogs went running. I walk the fence yet again and figure out that Dodger and D'Arts know how to climb the fence - a slightly crumpled section of fence and some of their fur stuck on the top. So we either have to raise the height of the entire fence or find some other solution. The dogs may not go running!

LOL! Is this a song? I think the chorus is "And the dogs, they went a-running..."
If they've figured out climbing, you're going to have to either add electricity or move to an addition to the fence. Not barb-wire (that's too extreme), but some kind of a lip on top so that when they climb up, they get to the top and can't go any higher. I had a dog (cockapoo) years ago who learned how to climb... the baby gate that we used to keep him in the basement. Came home one day and he greeted us at the door. Put him back in the basement, got out of site, and watched him climb. He actually made us re-define our fence in the back yard. Any hole that was three inches in diameter was enough for him to take off through. We built an extension onto the gate, and buried a plastic barrier at the bottom of the fence (because he'd dig his way under). Hmmm... I'm probably not helping. Don't let them read this Might be time for invisible fencing... but with how many collars?

It's something, that's for certain!
We are considering a low voltage horse fence as a last resort. We don't want to do the invisible fence bit because of the collars - they can malfunction, we have water (pond and marsh) and batteries can die. I've seen pictures of dogs hurt by their invisible fence collars and I'm not willing to chance that with my foolish three. The horse fence is basically the same effect but set up differently. I think raising the fence would work especially since all the recent repairs have been done with a finer gage fencing (not as easy to climb) but there is a whole lot of fence and we can't afford to do that right now. Maybe I can turn it into a hit song to pay for a good fence! lol!! [ 03-11-2004, 02:58 PM: Message edited by: Wyvern ] |

Wyvern, you could caste a slow spell on the dogs, as a starter.
Food for thought. You have raised the fence a few times, but have you thought of lowering the dogs? I have 2 dogs that i share with my girlfriend, 2 Dalmations, and i was just joking about lowering the dogs. Cheers and good luck with the fence. |

Yikes Wyv. Sounds like a full time job and then some. Do let us know if the raised fence worked or if you will be adding some verses to your new hit. |
