1. It's a misleading button. The truth:
This button allows you to use some traits, which are used as an ability or a weapon. For example, Dragon Fire (weapon), Cloak of Night (ability) Evil Eye (spell attack), and so on. When you want to use the trait, click the button and select the needed action. Since now, the trait is used, until you switch away by clicking the weapon, spell, carry object, and so on, button. You must gain the corresponding trait first. Only then the ability appears on the list and you can use it. If you have none of these traits, the button uses the Dragon Fire icon (don't ask me why, it's beyond my comprehension), and the list is empty. 2. By finishing the quests given by the guild. You must be a member of the guild if you want the quests and leveling up. 3. When you enter the guild building with a completed guild quest then WAIT! BE PATIENT!. The guild master will great you, drivel some nonsense and only then he notices that you have completed some quest. He will acknowledge the quest and gives you XP, money, and promotion. For example, if you are in warlock training and if you have collected the skull and the egg, then enter the temple or the Mages Guild (it does not matter which you select) and wait. After the greeting and the drivel, the guildmaster will change your role. While waiting, do not interrupt the guildmaster by entering the guild (by clicking the icon), trading, training and so on. All this will prevent the guildmaster from noticing your completed quest. Wait and do nothing. Note: Not all quests will promote you to a higher guild level. 4. It's an ability, which is active all the time. You need not to perform any action. 5. The Artifact skill (Item ID skill) is a guild level 3 Temple and Mages Guild skill. You will need to gain the Arcane Lore trait first (it's also guild level 3 Temple and Mages Guild). The skill must be trained either by investing your skill points in it or by training in the guilds. It does not improve automatically. 6. You future barbarian needs increase by 20 in the "kills" stat. Assistances do not count. Therefore, 20 killed monsters need not suffice because the monsters can be killed by different party members and not only by the future barbarian. When you take the barbarian role quest, check your stats and remember the value of the "kills" stat. Return to the guild when the stat increases by 20. See also (3): Wait! Be patient! 7. There are no terrific axes in the game. A rather good 2H axes can be found in the Ishad N'Ha and Brimloch Roon areas. 8. Theory: no limit. Practice: because of missing scroll bars on the skill window, limit is reached when you reach 12 in all visible skills.

Welcome to the board, Dragon 2005.
I see you have been well answered. I will add one thing, though: I suspect that the barbarian promotion quest resets it you reenter the guild before having killed twenty monsters, but I am not sure. If you train to become a monk the quest resets if you reenter the guild before the sufficient time has elapsed.
