I have an Hispanic friend wanting to buy a DVD player here and send it home to his brother with a DVD+R that I make for him from a VHS of his wedding. I know that most of the stores around here only sell DVD players that play media from Region 1. A couple are sold around here however that are multi-zone formats.

They are:

Cyberhome, CH-DVD300S for about $40 żżż (Plays PAL and DTSC) ???
Sony, DVP-NS530, for about $120

There are a few others, but I don't need to mention them all. Anyway, with the Cyberhome for example, one can program the thing to play any region from what I read online by a guy that wanted to brag about how much he knew regarding how to do this, and the Sony can be set to one of the six regions as well. That guy said that the Cyberhome could be set to zone "0" in order to play all formats, but I am afraid of the price being an indication that the quality is poor in that player. Therefore, I want to persuade my friend to go with the Sony, but I have to know what Zone to set it for. All I know is tht Zone 1 is USA and Canada.

What is Mexico's Zone? And will it be able to play my DVD+R that I make if it is set to Mexico's zone? Do I have to record in that zone format?

Best Buy out here had dvd players that could be set for various zones not too long ago. I don't think they were very expensive, either.

Anti Piracy? how does this region bullshit prevent piracy? its just a hassle to control money flow for the companies. For instance SeinFeld season 4 dvd was out in the US on 16th may, I have to wait for the region 2 version until 14th june.

One way to get around it is to use a dvd player in a computer, soem of them ignore completly the region system... but watching it on the computerscreen can be boring.

Jorath, to clear things up re: watching on the computer. You get a certain number of "changes". I.e you can change the region, normally 6 times, however this is easy reset. There is a way to do it with DVD players too, but it is harder, and can knacker the DVD player if you aren't careful. Best just to get a multi region, they are common these days.

I read that the regioning thing was also to slow down piracy, by making DVDs that work in one place in the world and not in another. It makes sense.
