Diablo player here still. Took a break with BG2: ToB...

Their recommendations are what I recommend you. Torment though is a MUST. Well if you are into substance and reading.

Nothing wrong with TOB. Rather then facing hordes of uninspiring enemies (SOA), you finally can get straight to the challenges.

Oh, dude, don't get me started on all the little details of this game that just simply ruin the suspension of disbelief...

Planescape Torment, if you can find it (Ebay usually has it if all else fails). Excellent game, nice graphics for its time (a lot of spell graphics look much better than Baldurs Gate II), deep in its story. Not a fast game to plow through, takes a steady dedication. So depends on your tastes if you like it or not, but worth you trying I'd say if you can find it (and it's very cheap priced now wherever you may find it, so in that aspect you can't really lose). If you have a Playstation 2;

Baldur's Gateark Alliance
Baldur's Gateark Alliance 2
Champions of Norrath

CoN is the newest and due to the diversity of items available the best, and BGA is the original. However, CoN is not a sequel to the two.

If you dont have a PS2, I think the others have covered other alternatives for the PC.
