PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - A Cambodian policeman who shot a suspected temple looter in the t's has been rewarded for his crime fighting skills, an official said on Wednesday.

Police officer Lim Kim Soth was presented with a $256 prize after shooting the 33-year-old suspect last weekend at Cambodia's northern 9th-13th Century Angkor Wat temple complex.

The keen-eyed officer spotted two men hunting for artifacts with metal detectors in a forest in the complex and opened fire when they tried to escape, Siem Reap deputy police chief Chea Sophat told Reuters.

"The bullet ricocheted off a tree trunk and hit the suspect in the t's and thigh," he said. "The policeman was rewarded for his work protecting the temples."

Lim Kim Soth was given the money from the interior ministry, equal to more than a year's pay, in a special prize giving by the provincial police chief.

The injured man was treated in hospital and appeared in Siem Reap provincial court on Wednesday to face charges of looting. He faces up to five years in jail if convicted.

ALL countries should give officers prizes like that for crimefighting !!!

Well, I agree that crimefighters should be given due recognition for their bravery and efforts. But I'm not sure about giving monetary awards... taxpayers' money could probably be better spent in other areas.
