why? to be honest, if Donut and Melusine and all the others had a problem with particular threads they should have messged the MODS, not post a nonsense thread that could create a schism between Ironworks members
i have NOT seen people posting purely for ranks. Yes, there have been one/two posts and so forth and I agree there are too many of those, but otherwise people are just having fun If we took Donut's posts for instance (sorry but you startedd this thread old boy) what has he posted? football and digs at other members. whoopee!!! I find myself agreeing with LS.
I would also like to point out, in addition, that if you do not like what is being posted, you're fully capable of posting "in the spirit of the good old Ironworks" yourselves. [ 08-25-2002, 07:16 AM: Message edited by: Jerome ]

*sigh* If those threads had been spamming for ranks then I'd agree, bad threads, delete or lock. But in fact they're just members having lots of fun! Sheesh, I remember last time there was a smacking to all of the spammers, IW got boring for AGES because everyone was afraid to post anything fun. And as soon as someone did it was labelled as spam!
IW was much more fun back when it WAS so that whenever you were done writing a reply for a thread it had grown two pages longer since you started. It was active, lively, fun. Some of it might have been spam, but it was fun spam. There is also stupid/bad spam, stuff where people just post random incoherent nonsense for no reason at all(Tiamat, anyone?). But the threads started by LS for example are fun. They're not serious roleplaying so they shouldn't go in the RP forum, they're fun roleplaying. There are lots of people that might enjoy them that might never go into the RP forum because they're not into serious RP'ing. In my opinion the spam is not even NEAR getting out of hand. It's at a nice and healthy point where it's just entertaining. |

Now, LS, please, let's not point any fingers...
I suppose one question we'd have to attend to is: what is 'spam'? Is there some definition we all agree upon? I mean, suppose there's this thread which you find just real silly, so silly you can't figure out how anyone could want to start a thread like this. But if there were say at least a couple of people really enjoying the thread, and if they weren't insulting/flaming anyone else and the content were nothing offensive, then would you call it spam? And would it be fair to police the whole board to such a degree that only those threads that suited what you considered 'proper' threads could be allowed? That wouldn't be very much in harmony with our belief in freedom of speech, would it? Well, perhaps if you own the message board...

Anyway, as for spam, we have: posts to do with ranks (yippee, I'm an Emerald Dragon) ,-- that sort of thing 1/2-word posts (a little embellishment helps anyway it does not include fun which was something Ironworks used to have long ago and I have been trying to retrieve as so many IW members were getting jumpy at each other and getting narky. Have you noticeed ANY of this happening since these outlets have been started? not me - at least not until this thread |

I agree with this thread to some extent, well I agree with the idea that spamming by certain individuals has gotten out of hand but not in threads started for drivel but where it is put into threads where people are actually attempting to converse with no respect to the fact that the drivel is not just off topic but that it can last for a full page or longer. I believe I was gently reprimanded by others for mentioning it in the first USA thread. It is completely understandable that some off topic conversation can end up in some threads (Leo's "Why Are You Here" thread springs to mind because I did not continue a conversation with Ladyzekke about Lantanas in that one because I was attempting to respect the thread for its intent) but when off topic conversation taks away from the intent of the thread or turns to endless, meaningless drivel, someone has to step up and say something. Spamming for ranks is not just wrong but it makes the people who do it appear to be a bit weak in the self-esteem dept. There are people here at IW who gained their ranks by participating in the actual gaming forums here at IW! I came here to GD with many many posts under my belt simply because I played W& W and participated in that forum, usually taking the night shift to help others playing the game before I was even aware that GD even existed. I am sure some people wish I had never come over here LOL. Ziroc put a lot of time into creating the ranks and the avatars that go with them. It would be a shame to see them have to be pulled down because of others' lack of respect for Ironworks but I wouldn't have any objections if I thought it would help curb spamming. In some cases it would and in others it wouldn't, so what do we do? We start a thread bringing some attention to it and get everyone to participate in a virtual flailing of members we think need a good whop upside the head. I haven't read many of the threads initially pointed out in this thread because their titles make them appear to be intended for "spam" or I just wasn't interested. Yes, I've poseted in a couple of them and my posts were as spammy as the rest but that was the point of those threads, to have a little very-non-serious fun and there is nothing wrong with that provided it doesn't get out of hand. OK that was more than just a smiley or one word lol. It all boils down to what Ziroc thinks and I'll sit on the sidelines with the rest of you all to wait and see. In the meantime I have a couple of web sites to move before 9 p.m. this evening (yeah right lol). [ 08-25-2002, 08:43 AM: Message edited by: Moni ] |

you have just stated the whole purpose of the "spam" threads. To be posted in when people feel like HAVING some fun and yes, I agree that spamming away from a thread topic is insensitive and somewhat disrespectful. I try my best not to do such things |
