Just checked out the user comments on the second link you posted, Stormy. They certainly don't sound like comments an accomplished poet would make. They sound more like the comments of a scam artist, specifically tailoring them to suit his/her needs.

Of course. No one can force you to pay for anything you don't want to, until you made a contract with them, and both you and the business were legally allowed to make that contract, ie under correct contractual capacity.

Does anyone know of a legitimate poetry publishing site?

I have a friend that has had his poetry published in a legitimate publication (writer's journal published by a university). He recommends and says that the most exhaustive and LEGITIMATE resource for poets is a book called "The Poet's Market." It tells what type poetry places are looking for, style, length, correct form to send submissions in, everything. You can order it for $17.49 at Amazon.com. They have been around for many years and are the recognized authority on these kinds of things. For those who are interested, there is alos a Writer's Market. Oh, and he said that a legitimate publisher always gives the poet and author free copies of whatever their work is published in---afterall they wouldn't have anything to publish if it weren't for the poets and authors. In other words, if these people were legit, they would be GIVING you one of the books, not charging the poets for them. They have just found a way to get people to buy these books. Of course, from what I read on the "rip-off.com" site, it doesn't appear that the books were always even published.

Stormy do you have a public library in your town! if you do go there and talk to the librarian and look at poetry books already published and copy down the publishers names and addresses. Then get a collection of your poems and send them to the publisher of your choice. If they feel your work is really good they will send you a contract to publish your work and also they will send you a check for your work as soon as you return the contract signed. You will never be charged for your own work in fact they will send you a free copy after it is bound and once a year for 5 to 10 years you will receive a check for your poems at the percentage rate declaired in the contract.

My mother writes novels and has 24 published. She said you should never be charged for your own work. She has 24 free hard cover books, one for each she has written and said that if some one wants to charge you for any book that they publish with your work in it then it is a scam and don't send them a dime for anything.
I don't know how much my Mom make's for her books but, She said that there is $500,000.00 set in trust for my two sisters and me for when she dies which won't be soon I hope, besides I don't need the money so good luck to you, But get a real publisher and you could get rich!
