Best class and best race

I just bought this game and am confused since there are so many races and classes to choose from. Can you guys give me so advice on making a new character? Which is the best race and the best class, and when combined together to make a powerful character? I wanted to have a character that specializes in combat but also want him to cast spells. I've checked the menu and the battlemage seem to be too good to be true, does he have a penalty or a weakness? Which race and birthsigns should i choose for my character to get the best effect then?

I would recommend creating your own class. Way more fun than just picking or choosing one of the presets. There is no such thing as best race or best class, it depends what your looking for. If you want a fighter-mage type then go with a Dark Elf. If your looking for a pure fighter than choose a Redguard and choose longblade as a major skill. As for birthsigns, I recommend either The LAdy or The Steed. The rest aren't really that useful.

The Atronach isn't useful? You get a 1.5 bonus to magika and you get a 50% chance to absorb every spell cast at you. If you are going to be a caster, the Atronach is by far the best sign.

I believe the Atronach Birthsign prevents you from recovering magicka through rest. Not worthed IMHO. There is a way to get around this problem using summon ancestral ghost though.
