I've heard of this game frequently, but I know next to nothing about it? Is it any good? Is it worth buying? I heard that it's a multiplayer only game, is there a single player version? I tried to read up on it at the everquest site, but their standard bland FAQ really didn't lay out the flesh and bones of the game, how it plays, etc. Any suggestions?

Everquest is a MMORPG - Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, or something like that.
It is a subscription based online game. You will need to charge it under your credit card. Unfortunately it doesn't come with any single player campaign, so either you pay the monthly charges and play online or you simply don't play at all. Some player argued that it is very addictive and thus the game is also nicknamed "EverCrack". Since I don't play any MMORPG games, perhaps some of the members here might tell you more. Everquest is not a game for loners-Literraly. THe only way to be a loner in this is to be a necromancer, and everyone hates you(npcs). If you manage to get a in a group, then things are better, but still pretty bad if your a tank. Everyone in it seems to be catered to the higher level crowd, and lower levelers are normally (when I last played-last year, it's probably gotten worse)simply altertanate characters for the high levelers, and tweaked out of their mind. In conclusion, EQ is a multiplayer game meant for higher level characters and with no single player mode. Wait for EQ2.

Is Everquest 2 supposed to be more single-player friendly? Frankly, I'd like to find a game, where the concentration is mostly on a single-player format and character building. It'd be incredible to play in a real-time world, where things change, or can be changed by player interactions, but frankly, I'm not really looking to dish out $14/month for that, on top of software costs. Any suggestions?

You can try Morrowind. It is a good single player game with lots of mods and a few good add-ons.

SWG is the worst MMORPG out their if you don't like going solo(isn't that a contradiction of terms?). Honestly, it's terrible. THe lag in cities is godawful, takes like an hour to get anywhere and that's alone without anyone in your group.
