quote: So, applying Ockham's Razor it would appear that Grand Ranger deleted the thread. I wonder why he would do that.

Couldn't say, Pastry of my heart, but I imagine he'll tell you if he sees this. Assuming didn't eat it, that is!

Yeah, I haven't been able to check here for a couple of days, and lo and behold a thread which I wanted to check up on (because I was participating in it a while back) has just disappeared! So I can't see if anyone had any points to make about any of my posts, there was some pretty interesting discussion in there.
If Ziroc or any of the mods deleted it there must have been a good reason for it so no argument from me, but if it has just disappeared or been deleted some other way I'll feel pretty narked about it. Like being cut off in the middle of a telephone conversation.

I wouldn't mind knowing where that one went as well. I was having fun and the discussion was 99% civil, which isn't bad for a serious discussion thread. But it isn't exactly like GR got total agreement with his views... maybe he just got annoyed and deleted it? It was his thread after all.

quote: Sorry Barry, I don't really agree with that. OK, he started the thread, but there were many participants - all of whom had apart in creating the discussion. If GR did delete it without giving any warning (I'm not saying he did of course, I don't know what happened with it) that would have been hugely unfair to all the other participants who had helped to create it - and to whom it therefore also 'belonged' if you see what I mean. I don't think it's right. JMHO. [ 02-28-2002: Message edited by: Epona ]

Well, I know that I for one didn't delete it, and neither did Memnoch. Neither of us delete threads unless they contain pornographic content or the threads are pure *SPAM* (which this one wasn't). So that leaves Ziroc and Grand Ranger as the only ones who could have deleted the thread.
Now, since Ziroc has been occupied with his family situation as of late, he would more than likely not have been the one to do this...not to mention that "Z" doesn't usually go around deleting threads for no good reason (or an explanation afterward). I think we can all figure out where the thread went to. quote: I think Epona has summed up the situation very correctly and I agree wholeheartedly. This is particularly why we DON'T delete threads at IW as a general rule; if anything, we lock them down, and only when the discussion has gotten so far out of hand that it is escalating into a flame war. But we lock them rather than delete them so that if there are any good points in the thread, they can be copied and pasted to form another thread. Here was a thread filled with great points and they have all been lost. And here, for one, is ONE moderator who is lobbying for the removal of the ability for regular members to delete posts and threads.

quote: Ok then, I see where you are coming from. I agree with you that it was probably a little rude to not give any explanation, but we are probably jumping to conclusions here anyway. You never know...

Good idea Saz.
There was a brief period as I recall when we couldn't delete our own posts (just after the upgrade?). I felt a bit lost at first, simply because it is easy to hit send and realise 10 seconds later that you said something you didn't really mean and then want to delete it before anyone gets hurt. However it doesn't mean that if you have a change of heart or were too harsh, argumentative, sarcastic, or whatever that your words have to sit there for all time - there is still the 'edit' facility.

quote: Yeah, absolutely. It might have just been a glitch in which case it's annoying that the discussion was lost (isn't it always!!) and I wouldn't want it to seem as if I'm blaming GR - when I have no way of knowing where the thread went!!!

quote: There is that...and also, it would be an inconvenience in that we moderators would have to be responsible for deleting the "test signature" threads, et al. Still, it would be a welcome small burden to get rid of threads being lost. Just for clarification (and this is from a Mod standpoint), as Epona said, no one person *owns* a thread, per se, not even if they initiated it. Once you post, it belongs to the community, and especially to everyone who participates in it. Destroying the thread without just cause is a "crime" in my book. Cheers,
