Bard spells are cool. Yep no magic missile but chromatic orb is a great spell

Aasimar and Drow are the obvious choices because both get +2 Charisma, the main stat for Bards. But pretty much every race makes a more or less decent Bard, except for Duergar (Gray Dwarves) and Svirfneblin (Deep Gnomes) because of their immense penalty to that same stat.
