I am currently running windows 98. Last night a friend offered to let me instal either windows 2000 or XP whichever I wanted since he has both. Which one should I take?

I'd say XP, however if you're using control pads or joysticks for certain games, they won't be compatible with XP.

It's just my own personal bias, but I've really got a problem with XP's childish interface. It looks like it was made for the Teletubbies. It's probably more stable and all, and I think it's slightly newer, so if you can put up with the aforementioned, go for it. You'll probably find that Windows 2000 is more compatible with games, applications and plug-ins, but if your computer's more of a workhorse, XP would be more suitable. Saying that, nothing can match Windows RG

From what i se the Windows 2000 is an "Office" product not for games so i whould suggest Win XP because it is buildt for games and home entertainment and i have had win xp now for one year and newer get into any problems with games or whatever and the "Teletubbies" thingies can easly be "removed" by changing the look in the settings so that is nothing to be worried about!
And it is wery stabile to i have not rebooting the pc for almost a month and i play Diablo II, NWN, Morrowind, Thief 1 & 2, M&M 9, and belive it or not Ultima 9 so i have no prob at all and i installed a new ADSL modem no prob, installed new network card, no prob installed new scanner no prob so i can say it is WAY better than win 98 that crashed all the time! lol but the best is Linux but there you can`t play so mutch games lol! Remember that you can disable Windows XP bubbly look and set it back to the old Windows style.

I will say XP for the sole reason that 2000 is being outfased by Microsoft

Just make sure you can go back to 98 if you really want to. I run 98se and went to ME - as you know that sucked! Went to XP next and it was incompatable with some essential hardware! The manufacturers have no intention of releasing XP drivers (read: Buy Our New Product!) and i couldn't afford hardware updates so had to go right back to 98... If it ain't broke...
I find NT/2000(in-laws' network) & XP(my wifes graphic design computer) great if they're compatable with everything you need...

XP is a refined version of 2000, with better compatibility for older software. The only downside is lack of native hardware support but the OS has been out long enough now that there are plenty of drivers available. XP comes in two flavours home and pro, and given the choice I'd go with pro; it has much better security features than the home version. The only problem with your friend installing these is that XP uses a little anti piracy technique called product activation. I won't bore you with the details but here's the link. http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activation/
Unless your friend has a corporate version of XP then the chances of you being able to use it are slim and none, if your friend has already activated it even once. Bottom line: Go with XP Pro. I've run many software titles from as far back as 97 with no problems which I can't say for my 2000 machine. Just make sure your hardware is up to the task.
