Re: Where Canada is today
Nothing really went wrong. They called an election after about 2.5 years. I think they should have waited the 4 years, because they said they would do that: or not call one early basically.
Maybe they felt they were in a position to take the majority..? I think we're doing well. Our dollar has been strong $110to the US last year) and over all, things seem ok, or pretty good. These days, you shouldn't hope for much better. Some people say Stephen Harper is a "control freak". I don't think he's got the power of a president to do that. I know it sounds terrible, but I'm also sick and tired of a prime minister with a french accent. I lived in Ottawa for 23 years and had French shoved in my face most of the time. I've just become bitter. What a sad thing. The Quebec license plates say " je me souvenir"; I remember. And I do remember what they've done over the years..

Re: Where Canada is today
Edit: Had something in mind to say in regards to that, but the more I got into it the more I realized it wasn't coming out as clever as I had planned, so I aborted the attempt.

Re: Where Canada is today
I'm impressed that some Americans actually know where is.

Re: Where Canada is today
I'm sure they felt they were in a good position to take the majority. The mess probably hurt them a bit, but they still got more seats.
I think in these times, it's not good to make a big change like that. I hear they kinda goofed in Quebec by cutting back on the arts programs and lost votes that way. I don't know any more though. I DO KNOW HOWEVER, That this was "the" lowest turn-out for votes in our democratic history: 59%! Maybe that's a good thing if people were uniformed and voted for the wrong reasons, as mentioned in the other thread.

Re: Where Canada is today
Reminds me of a video, I think someone posted it here, where some Americans were asked to identify France on a world map and at least 2 of them pointed to Australia. I kinda laughed, but it was kinda sad too.
