Yes, Mages can summon animals, but only one at a time. If you try to summon one, and you already have one summoned, the first one will be unsummoned. Use the spell Lower Resistance. Also use spells that Dragons are not immune to, like ones that do physical damage. Hire a henchman and soup him/her up with powerful spells. Cast an elemental resistance spell on yourself. Also use Ethereal Visage. If you run out of good spells, use the spell Tenser's Transformation and fight the dragon in melee combat. That's all I can think of now, I guess.

Question Mark

Apparently, according to my friend who is right next to me at the moment, it is very hard to fight dragons with mages, because of their low hp and the dragon being so very powerful.

Hmm, a mage can summon a monster, plus a familiar, plus bring along a RPC, let them keep the dragon at a distance and pelt it with spells.

Dragons have magic resistance, so do not cast directly at them.

Example: 13th level Wizard vs the Dragon in the sphere.
This Dragon has low resistance to fire but was able to dodge my fireballs when cast at him, Daelon runs away in fear... Solution: Prepare Daelon and Summons with Clarity, place scroll based Delayed Fireballs near escape path. Run in, Daelon attacks along with scroll based Celestial Avenger, aim three Empowered fireballs near Dragon that is beating the xxxxx out of Daelon. Dragon comes after me. Run! Dragon catches 1st Delayed Fireball. Dead dragon.

Example: 16th level Wizard vs Big Red
This Dragon has a weakness to cold damage (and I thought Lighting might hurt him, but it did not...) Solution: Prep for Fire based attacks and big physical damage because if you give him the sphere, you cannot run fast enough to get away from him nailing you a couple of times. Scroll based time stop, unleash Empowered Ice Storms and Empowered Cones of cold. I got him, but about a split second after it told me he was dead, I was dead. I have not tried it again with a Wizard because my only successful time required five reloads to get it right, well, kind of right.

I've always had an easier time fighting powerful monsters with mages than with any other class. Success seems to hinge on whether there's an understanding of the appropriate protection spells to cast beforehand.

By the time a mage in NWN fights his first dragon, he should have access to a Greater Adventurer's Robe which absorbs 10 points of damage. Adding the spells "Shadow Shield" and "Greater Stoneskin" will bring your total to 40 points.

With the 4th level spell "Elemental Shield," your opponents will sustain 1d6/+! damage per caster level for every successful physical attack against your character. You'll also receive 50% resistance to fire and cold.

Beyond that, I usually "maximize" spells like Chain Lightning and Cone of Cold. Summon a Balor for seasoning and you'll make a meal out of NWN's dragons that'll last weeks in the fridge.
