OK, guys, now I am lvl 14 solo mage, and I plan to get that staff from the rogue-stone-locked building. I want to know, is the fight tough, as compared to the Guarded Compound fight? What would be the suggestions/tips?

In the room, there are:
1 lich
1 vampire
1 mage (high level)
1 beholder
1 thief (i think)

tips: cast all your protection spells, then cast any webs you have, while still out of view of the table in the center. Then use a scroll of protection from magic, then use a wand of cloudkill to kill everything, you cannot cast any spells once you have used that scroll, only wands

Heh, thats more than I can handle now! But I will try out the 'stay-out-of-sight-while-cloudkilling' tactics, or simply go invis and steal the staff, going invis once more after. Is it on the table??

Supposedly it's about the second toughest fight in the game. If you don't have any luck then download "Elmonster's Journal" from Mr. Kevvy's website. In one passage he describes how he did the fight with a solo mage. The URL is

Thanks for the link! The language that Elmonster writes is rather interesting, and the tactics he gives is going to work!

It is not a quest, IMHO, just a possibility to obtain a really powerful staff that just kicks asses! All you have to do is to enter a door in the lich-house in the bridge district having a rogue stone in your inv. (the door not leading to the lich) and manage a very tough fight with the folk inside...

The Staff is worth this!

When mentioning the lineup of baddies you have to fight in this mess, it is imperative to list the tactics you're going to face

The mage, if she fights you like she did me (numerous times) WILL gate in a pit fiend. She will also cast a meteor swarm at you. The vampire can only be hit by a (I think) +3 or better weapon, the Lich will cast simalacrum early on and loves time stop, aka "cheesy lich spell." The female mage also will cast time stop. If you don't tie up the beholder early on, woe to you - I believe I remember it being an elder orb.

Hiding helps little - the baddies won't appear until someone is visible and in the room adjacent to the small room where you appear.

The beholder and vampire should be put down as fast as possible. You will have to beat on the mage and lich for some time, and I don't think it's possible to take them out early on - note I have not read how the solo mage did it.

I'm on my second trip through Amn, and I too must again face this battle soon.
Good Luck.

Actually this fight is pretty easy with a dual classed Bounty Hunter/Mage.
(I just finished soloing with him. It's the third time I finish the game and sofar I must say he is the most powerfull character). Really the Bounty Hunter's traps are the most powerfull spell in the game!!

After appearing on the table, SHANGALAR will teleport to the small entry hall and cast his protection spells. You should mine this area with traps; they will most probably kill him before he gets his protections off.

The BEHOLDER will appear to the right side of the room. Mine this area by casting skull traps. He should not be able to survive this damage, but make sure you lay out enough traps in the right positions.

So after you laid out your traps and skull traps, cast a cloudkill and some protection spells if you want. It is wise to cast spell deflection just in case not all skull traps exploded and the Beholder survived. True Sight is also a recommendation, just in case Shangalar lives enough to cast some illusions.

Walk into the room, just enough to make Shangalar appear. Be carefull not to set up your skull traps upon you! After he teleports go back to the entry hall.

The VAMPIRE you should best kill with the Daystar sword. Equip it and use its ability to cast Sunray. If you are lucky, this will kill him immediately.

The FIGHTER should pose no real thread to you. Summon an elemental if you want -the fighter attacks with his bare fists and can't hurt him.

Finally the female MAGE is so stupid, she doesn't know that her "Staff of Magi"'s Protection from Evil is faulty and doesn't work. She will summon a demon which will attack her. Make sure that you cast Protection from Evil upon you.
