I know this is a very basic question. I'm a newb. I just wanted to know how to create a 'whole' party, as opposed to creating one character and then joining up with NPC's. I read somewhere that you could create a whole party by starting a multiplayer game and then doing something after that.

Please help!

Hmmm, i'm not exactly sure, but I shall offer up my knowledge none the less. I think that you must go onto Multiplayer and then click the ICP or something or other. Then you will be taken through and given the option to create a whole party. Im not sure if this works so you will have to clarify it with someone else.

By the way, why dont you want to NPCs? They provide a hell of alot more sub-quests and amusement.

What you need to do is this.

1. Create a Multiplayer game. Doens't matter what protocal you use.

2. Create all your characters

3. Start the game and get into the into.

4. Save your game.

5. Go into your Baldurs gate directory and copy the contents of your mpsave directory to your save directory.

6 Start the game and load the save game.

7. Play and enjoy!

Addition to TDC:

Just use a TCP/IP game. That's the only one it'll let you host without jumping through lots of hoops.

Remember not to overwrite any previously saved SP games that you may want to keep while copying your MP save file(s).

Riftmaker: Are you sure buddy? I'm fairly confident that you can do the same with "serial" mode... as that is what I remember using for playing "single player multiplayer" (for lack of a better term).

Or maybe I'm just delusional. Both alternatives are highly likely.

It is TCP/IP. Generally speaking, serial connections cause computers to freeze (easily noticed sometimes by the lack of music) or stop for awhile, unless an actual connection is made. TCP/IP is the best choice.

Does playing a game with an entirely 'made' party mess up the plot of the game? For instance, if there's no Imoen, how does that part of the plot go?

it's the same. the plot stays the same wether you play with a solo character, play with npc's or make your own party. it is as though the game believe that the plot-related-characters are in your party, even when they are not.

There is less roleplaying incentive to advange to Chapter 4, true, but there are still plenty of reasons to go:
  • To rescue Imoen, simply because she's an innocent victim of wrongful imprisonment.
  • To kill Imoen, so that more essence is left for you.
  • To get revenge on Irenicus for torturing you.
  • To find out what Irenicus knows about your origin.
  • To kill Irenicus simply because he's an evil bastard.
  • To eradicate the Cowled Wizards, or at least destroy their power base.
  • Because you've destroyed all the (Vampires/Shadow Thieves) and there's nothing else to do.
