Balanced party...that's what I'd go with. At least 2 "tank" fighter characters, at least 2 mages, a cleric or druid, and a thief. A good 6-character party would be:
*-Fighter or fighter combo *-Paladin or Ranger (I'd go with Paladin for Carsomyr) *-Thief (swashbuckler; doubles almost as a fighter-thief) *-Cleric (a Fighter-Cleric combo is good here, too) *-Mage (straight mage, or if you want specialist, do a Conjurer since all you lose is Divinity...OR if you have the ToB expansion, a Wild Mage) *-Another Mage (or a Bard for both the bardsong and magic...you may wish to use the Skald kit for the powerful bardsongs they get). Whichever one you create as your "first" character will be the Bhaalspawn, the others will add in once you free them from their cages in the starter dungeon. One other thing: After you create the game in Multiplayer, save the game...then exit, go to the C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate SOA\ folder, find the mpsave folder, and copy the game to the Save (single player) folder. It helps improve game play considerably to run the game in Single Player mode rather than multiplayer. Cheers, -Saz

Saz pretty much covered the basics well.
I am usually heavy on spellcasters cause I play them well. It depends on your playing style. Going heavy on tanks never hurts, and you can take and give damage. If you get a mage, a sorcerer is my first choice because they are easy and have a good number of spells available. I tend toward any spells that will summon or deal good damage (but not area of effect spells - friendly fire is a pain)... the best way to find out is to go through the game once and find out what your strengths are in your playing style. Then you can develop a party to take advantage of that.

Once you hit ToB, you really discover the wondrous benefits of Multiclassing. (Also, in my version, they seem to get a lot more hitpoints than they deserve. I don't understand it, but I i'm not going to argue with it, either.)
My Powerplaying Dream Team: Elven Fighter/Thief Half-Elven Ranger/Cleric Elven Fighter/Mage Half-Elven Fighter/Druid Elven Thief/Mage Half-Elven Cleric/Mage Giving me 4 Tanks, 3 Priests (2 Clerics, 2 Druids), 2 Thieves (3 Backstabbers) and 3 Mages. Damn. And the Fighter/Thief is the only one who can't cast spells, but that's OK because he'll be Dispelling everything with Carsomyr.

For SoA only, I recomend dual class:
1. ranger/CLERIC, dual immediately, blunt weapons, sling, 2 weapons 2. kensai/MAGE, dual at level 9, staves, axes, 2H weapon 3. swashbuckler/FIGHTER, swords, katanas, 2 weapons, short bow, spend all your skill points with Disarm Traps (100) and Detect Traps (100) and give the rest to Pickpocket. Dual immediately. Install level 50 rules because this party of three will reach level 28 or so. I have no experience with ToB. As far as I know, multiclass characters are reported to be more advantageous than dual class ones. A serious analysis would be highly appreciated, for example, what is better? High level of a single/dual class character or versatility of a multiclass? At least one thought: you will never need a super level thief unless you are about to specialize in backstabbing or, of course, if you want to play a thief. Potions of Mater Thievery will help you when needed. Therefore, a character with a thief part would be dual class in ToB, too. Perhaps, the character would dual later than in SoA.
