And VulcanRider, it's just a case of living outside the box...

So, here's another one...

I have eight matchsticks. You give me one more. How can I make ten?

No breaking, splitting, soliciting, stealing, splicing, or other moves that try to redefine the puzzle are needed (or allowed).
Nine matchsticks:

Correct, LennonCook. Nine matchsticks make TEN.

And VulcanRider, since my answer wasn't expected by the author of the book, would you mind cluing me in to the "correct" solution?

1 + 4 + 16 + 64 = 85 squares

Edit : I just found 3 more, that makes 88 total so far

Edit2 : Gaaah I just found 12 others ! That makes 100 ! 100 squares !

I'm not counting that and I'm definetly not smart enough to think up some mathematical formula ( of which i'm positive there is ).

So I'll just stroll ahead and post a little riddle I remembered.
I only know the dutch version though, so the translation might not make any sense

You're walking down a beautifull road, on your way home. However, as you continue the road suddenly splits into two: left and right. Unfortunately you cant remember which road to take anymore
In between those two roads however is a house, where two brothers live and they know which road you have to take. You -can- still remember that one of these brothers always lies, while the other always tells the truth. Again though, you've forgotten who does what

You may only knock on their door once, ask only one question and you dont know which brother will open the door.

So ... the question :

Assuming you dont want to take the wrong road ...
What question do you ask the brother that opens the door, in order to make sure that he always tells you the correct road to take ?

There are 204 squares on a chess board.

As for the mathematical formula it is very simple: 12+22+32+42+52+62+72+82 = 204.

Actually, Daan, a variation of your riddle was asked last week. You ask one brother which road the other brother would tell you to take to get home. Then you take the other road, since the lying brother would tell you the false road (since the truthteller would really tell you the true road), and the truthteller would also tell you the false road (since the liar would tell you that one).

Last time, it was with demons and doors, but the logic is the same.

Edit: Okay, I see you want the brother to tell you the correct road. That does make it a new riddle.

Simply add another layer of questioning:

If I asked your brother which road you would tell me to take if I asked you how to get home, which road would he answer?

Ask the liar, and his brother would say the false road, 'cause that's the way the liar would tell you and the truthteller would tell you that. So the liar has to lie and tell you the correct road.

Ask the truthteller, and he'll tell you truthfully that the liar would switch the road that the truthteller would have told you.

In either case, the brother will tell you the correct road.
