It depends on what your fighting, who's in your party ect.
Naturally the death spells are very good offensivly but they're level 8 and 9 spells. Magic misiles is a very effective early spell. Mirror Image and Blur are good low level protective spells. Armour of faith is good for Clerics and Druids as well. A fireblall (edwins favourite) is also a very good low level spell. It just depends on your party, the situation and who your fighting. ------------------ |

Try and learn what the spells do, it'll be much easier. the Baldurs Gate manual has a description for each one.
Try and get to know the symbols as well, then you won't have to keep stopping and reading the description. ------------------ |

Personal opinion ahead:
Take advantage of spell sequencers, spell trigger, and contingencies spells, the are wonderous additions to the game. The most important part of spell casting is the tactic, combination of some low level spells can be very deadly. My personal favorite for mages are (offensive only): -Abi-Dalzim Horrid Wilting -Time Stop -Spell Strike (I know, it's not really offensive, rather supporting) -Magic Missiles -Flaming Arrows -Fire Ball For Clerics (again offensive only): -Earth Quake -Sunray -False Dawn -Bolt of Glory Keep in mind it is how you use the spell that makes it deadly. ------------------ Long live H22A1!!!!! |

Sequencers were Nalia's bread-and-butter spells all the way through the later portions of the game for me. Three high-level magic missiles loaded into one shot assassinated magic-users before they could become dangerous. A Breach, Secret Word and Dispel Magic was instrumental in neutralising many magical defences. A Fireball, Web and Stinking Cloud was also a devastating combination. Experiment, it's good fun!
Tancred Let's face it... with mages, as with gunslingers, the fastest draw wins. |

Abi Dalzim is definately the best spell in the entire game.
It even works on some Ulitharids and Mind Flayers which are said to be 100 per cent magic resistance??! Though they can't be right? (Maybe 10% hehe - ) ------------------ Greetings mortals, my name is Wah, Arch Lich Wah. |
