Well, I don't know about you, John D Harris, but down here in FL, we drink from aluminum cans and paint our houses with colors. That made me think though, we changed colour to color, flavour to flavor, armour to armor, and all the other words like that, so why didn't we change your to yor? Just something that I was curious about.

As the resident chemist here at IW, I believe I may be able to resolve the matter. Here is the IUPAC (the people that sort these kind of thngs out)listing of elements, and the spelling is given as Aluminium.
AFIAK the Brits got Aluminium and the US got Sulfur (formerly sulpher). There you go, matter solved, thread closed . Or is there more to it than that .

All that writing without two crucial vowels is too hard. I'm with you Donut - it's more important to discover why there is no F in alcohol.

Of course what everyone seems to be forgetting is that when European settlers first went to America there was no set standard used for spelling as there is today. Look at copies of old documents from that time if you're unsure, and you'll see a whole range of variation of spelling. It is only natural that spelling would evolve differently in different localities then. Nobody 'changed' anything. Neither is incorrect.
And if you're looking at Shakespeare - well hardly anyone uses Shakespearian language any more, but iirc the closest modern equivalents are more likely to be found in the States than in England (although correct me if I'm wrong). For example, in England nobody uses the word 'gotten' - we use the shortened 'got' at all times, but 'gotten' is the older form. Shakespeare had no standardised spelling to refer to, he even spelled his own name several different ways.

For the most part Canadians still use proper english although American english is creeping into our vocabulary more and more.
