What the hell happened at the end of the film? Did Donnie go back in time and somehow take the engine of the plane with him...I'm sure I missed a significant part of the story.

Little help, please?

What do you mean exactly, by 'take with him?' What I think he did is that he went back in time to the time of the accident, and then went to a more dangerous spot around the house to die, thus preventing the end of the world.

I always thought he went back in time to make sure everything that had happened, wouldn't happen. And, yes, the plane engine was from the future.

He was supposed to die that night. At least, that's what I think... Brilliant movie, by the way

I just rented this, and WOW! I wish all movies were this good, deep and thought provoking!

I know physics well, and believe he experienced a temporal causality loop. Below is a def:

A temporal causality loop is a special condition of time, in which time runs for a certain period, then resets itself to a point back in time, after which the events play out over again.

He COULD have kept it going over and over. I would have. And just not go out and meet that girl.

I don't think this is the first time Donnie's travelled back in time. If you've seen the director's cut, you'll know what I mean. If you haven't, then consider this:

Taken from Kelly's The Philosophy of Time Travel
"When the Manipulated awaken from their Journey into the Tangent Universe, they are often haunted by the experience in their dreams.

Many of them will not remember.

Those who do remember the Journey are often overcome with profound remorse for the regretful actions buried within their.."

So why then, is Frank so significant?

Hehe, the Donnie Darko movie can make you think till your head spins and hurts, so I kind of gave up and took up the same opinion as Link: He was supposed to die that night.

If you like a timetraveling thinking movie, try 12 Monkeys as well.
