A small technical question 'bout the death-spell :
The manual says it will kill all summoned creatures AND any creature of 8 hitdice and less ... what does this mean ?? That the computer rolls 8 dices of 6 and then sums them up (wrong expression) Meaning that if he rolls a -6-, 8 times .. any creature with less then 48 hp will die ?? Or am i on the COMPLETELY wrong track here ? |

each class of monster is assigned a certain number of hit dice. so for instance, say you have 2 ogres. they both have x hitdice (let's say 4 I don't remember). so for each ogre those 4 dice are rolled to determine the hitpoints. The first ogre may have 24 hp while the second only has 12. With the death spell it doesn't matter how many points they have, just how many dice that class of creature gets. Thx !!
It means a creature with more than 48 hp will never get killed by a death spell. Which 'll give me a hint on when to use it: On thieves and bandits and such, but not on dragons or Irenicus a something ) Thx again |

Actually, I believe Hit Dices uses 10-sided dices, because Umber Hulks definitely have more than 48 Hp, but they fall to Death Spell.

*scratches head* Are you sure it isn't 8 sided dice?

Sorry for sounding REALLY ignorant but.......
What is a Hit Dice? How does this affect the hit points of a monster? Don't all monsters have fixed hitpoints? Again, forgive me for this ignorance, but I've never been exposed to PnP DND, in fact the only DND game (or close) I've played is the BG saga... |

Nope, all monsters don't have set hit points. Each monster species has a certain number of hit dice. These dice are rolled for each individual monster in the species to determine the number of hit points it has. So you could run across a monster that has 200 hit points and later come on the same type of monster that only has 100. Generally though the ranges are pretty close. |

So in theory, a monster with a higher hit dice, say 12, would have more hit points, correct? Considering the number of monsters in SOA and ToB, and most of them should have more than 8 hit dice, the spell is virtually useless! I mean it will work just fine on kolbolds and company, but that's about it.... what a waste of spell space.
Thanks for the clarification Prime. |

Death Spell works against Umber Hulks, Minotaurs, Yuan-Ti, etc... ... Pretty cool when your fighters blink as all the opponents... well... just drop dead. |

In the original D&D game, the dungeon master would roll D8s for monster hit points... hit dice are D8.
