No they're good, at least I presume they must be in order to be chosen by the record label. It's just that when they're recording song they're feeding it through a computer system which treats the sound of the artists voice to remove any background noise and interference and perhaps alter his or her voice's pitch slightly in places. Also the addition of backing vocals while recording is much clearer then you would find in a live performance. The actual singer is usually good (despite the fact the songs they are singing are dung like in nature) its just sometimes you're used to hear the perfect recored voice and then you're presented with the live version, nervous bvecause shes singing for a number of people RIGHT in front of her, who's breathing in deeply close to the mike and who is struggling to sing the song (she does have to remember a whole damn song which we sometimes neglect to remember is really hard).

Sometimes its a case of pressure, and sometimes we're just introduced to the real voice. Without the technology to support it.

Okay, sorry about that, but I just saw her live with just her and her guitarist singing things i'll never say, however it is not "live", it is in a room, so I guess she does better in enclosed spaces like that. Phew! That's a relief! I guess I was just so disappointed, so I am ready to accept that she does have SOME talent - just her way of coping I guess - she is only 18 after all!

I hope you weren't under the delussion that pop stars are great musicians. Pop stars are manufactured and marketed for mass appeal, not tallent.

Pop stars are like a certain gelatinous processed vaguely pork product ( ) ..... easily identifiable, not all that bad, but no where near the real thing.

Without computer editing you'd be suprised how many pop artists sound completely differant.
That is so true. Very few singers sing without any kind of editing.. itīs difficult for even professionals to just go and start singing in an empty room. They sound like a different person.

I'll echo what a lot of others have said about pop stars - they are manufactured product, and they are chosen based on many factors, and actual singing ability is usually the smallest part of the equation.

Looks, style, and manageability all figure in more than raw talent.

You'd be surprised how many acts are manufactured items (anyone remember Milli Vanilli?)... then agian, maybe not!

Yeah I do...Thing is, you can't be on the charts if you don't have the right image/attitude etc because that is what sells. It sells, hence it's on the chart...You can't be an old Rock'n Roller crying your sad and depressed soul out because the people who buy don't give a tossers a**e about sad other people. U2 realised this - they're now singing about Beautiful Days rather than Bloody Sundays. That's too long ago and it doesn't sell.

About the technical side of things: A singer sounds exactly as good as she is. A sound engineer (such as me, for example) can change the quality and pitch of the voice quite a lot, but technology has yet to invent artificial talent. We can't change the delivery of the song or text, that's up to the voice trainer and the "artist".

she's bad live. not to mention she plays guitar in her clips but doesn't need one live (at least, i've never seen her use it in any live clip and i've seen lots of them since my sisters like her). 2 reasons for me to not like her, though some songs are quite good (good, still not like it)

edit: agree with what everyone said about pop.

Remember that when you record something you get to do it as much as you can afford and then pick the best little bits from each take. When singing live you only get one chance to get the whole piece right. So its possibly understandable that when live the quality of singing will go down quite a lot unless you're really good. But Yorick is probably more the person to ask about that - my experience of being recorded is quite limited.
