What sort of video card/ram are you running? I know my video card is crap and only have 64 meg ram (hush everybody, I'm upgrading next month by several times over!), so whenever a lot of enemies come up on me and/or there are a lot of graphic effects such as spells, things get really sluggish really fast. I never noticed it so much in IWD, but it became annoying in HoW and TotL.

clean out your cache, temp, and tempsave folders ... just delete them, they are recreated when you restart the game

also, increase the size of your cache folder ... if your available HD space permits, try using 800 meg

turn off the 3D options if you have them on and run in 2D

try turning off all the ambient sounds (especially on burial isle!)

reduce your pathfinding nodes to something around 20,000 or less

try reducing the number of feedback options you have on

if all else fails, reduce your frame rate
