well thats not really true. if you copy your saved game folder and your character folder, and your override folder, you wont loose your saved games.
if you have custom portraits you will need to backup that folder too.
the only other folder you might want to save is Mpsave, if you have one. it only gets created if you start a multiplayer game. but it holds multiplayer saves.

Try performing a ScanDisk before re-installing. It may do the trick.

Also; have you installed the BG II patch ?

Scan disk, defrag should be done before reinstalling (I had a problem after reinstalling, but after I ran scan disk and defrag it did the trick). As for backing up folders, backup PORTRAITS, SOUNDS, MPSAVE, AND SAVE. You might also want to backup your OVERRIDE folder if you have made any changes...

Don't worry about bbacking stuff up. The game can only uninstall files that are recorded in the registry as having been installed in the orignial install process. Therefore any saved games and custom stuff will NOT be touched by the uninstall program and u can simply reinstall the game and all your saved games will be there. Also u probably don't have to reinstall the game, is the problem only with the summon wyvern spell? If so, get someone to send u this spell and just put it in the override folder.

Every time my game of BG2 starts crashing and getting slow, I just run scandisk and clear my c: drive. The freed space seems to make a difference.
oh yeah, and maybe you should download some newer graphics drivers. I was having a lot of trouble until I saw I hadn't updated since '97
