I have a soundblaster live player 5.1 on my system and I have creative 5.1 speakers. Whenever I launch NWN, when quiting it resets my system to 2 speakers mode. Is this a bug? Any way to avoid it?

I have the same sound setup that you do.
Do you have the latest drivers downloaded from Creative Labs? If not, then start there. I was having the exact same problem...but not just with NWN...it happened with IWDII as well. After I installed the latest drivers last week, I have not had the problem to reoccur. I am running WinXP. The reason I only installed the drivers as of last week was because I forgot to when I upgraded my OS... If that does not work...then let me know. I will try to research it with you. Eventually, (Meaning when I get the $$$) I will be buying an Audigy 2. I think Live! is getting too outdated, and the Audigy 2 supports THX!

This is a well known problem with this type of soundcard, and they mention it in the Readme file.
"Sounds may not play correctly or the game may crash under Windows XP if you are using the default drivers for the Creative Labs Soundblaster Live Cards. Please upgrade your drivers as soon as possible." The upgrade fixes most cases but alot still experience problems (I suspect the problem lies with XP) and really have no other choice but to get a new soundcard....

I still have not bought my Audigy 2 yet, but now I am having troubles and I think it is time to do so, or not be able to play NWN or the expansion. As of yesterday, the speakers would reset on my system to only the front speakers and the the game lagged heavily. Even if I was not moving,,,the sound (music) was lagging in places...you could hear it skip or stutter. Worse of all...when I turned the game off...the system was still lagging! I would click on a Word document or even the start button for example, and it would take forever to pop up the panel or screen...as though their were a delay of command of like 5 seconds between the command and the response. I would have to reboot the system to clean it out. Now what the freak is going on? The only thing I can think of that I have done "new" to the system (WinXP) is update my video drivers two days ago. But what would the video drivers have to do with the sound?
Important note>>>IWDII is perfect and clean. No troubles at all. Only NWN. So the question is>>>Will an upgraded sound card solve my trouble? [ 05-26-2003, 08:43 PM: Message edited by: Larry_OHF ]

This is an XP bug, Larry. I get it quite a bit but usually the game freezes on a sound loop after a period of non-related server lag and then locks up entirely. It then lags for about 1-2 mins after the game is exited like you said with icons on the desktop not responding or doing so after lots of time. It clears when XP finally delivers the infamous 'Send error report'.
I hate it I really do, and I don't think they have any intention of fixing it cuz I've been making them aware for months. I'd hold off on a new soundcard, maybe try changing your sound config to 'Miles Fast' and see if that helps. Could be the vid drivers..video lag will also lag sound so it is possible, but I'm 99 % sure it's the old XP bug. [ 05-26-2003, 10:09 PM: Message edited by: SpiritWarrior ]

No, No...this is a bug simply. It does not happen everyday lol, at least to me it don't. If it is happening everytime you play then you most certainly do have a problem but it shouldn't be..Is it?
I live with this XP bug, like I said I dunno if they ever will fix it. SOU I'm dreading cuz with more games it just seems like more bugs. As I side, I haven't pre-ordered anything as I learned a lesson watching other people pre-order IWD2. I pick most of my stuff up on E-bay from private retailers who overstock. Usually available on release date, brand new and unopened but about 15 dollars cheaper.

I am running NWN on XP also and so far no problems. I have ran it with the SB Live 5.1 Platinium and now with the Audigy 2 Platinium. Either card has worked just fine. I have heard of some issuses with the value editions because they off load some of the sound processing to the CPU. I would try playing with the drivers first unless you are trying to justify the upgrade. One of the biggest reasons I did the upgrade was for the 1394 AKA Firewire port. Very nice if you need it.

Granamere if you're running XP I promise you will eventually stumble on this bug - especially if you play online (although it happens offline too).
Larry is it still happening? As I mentioned in the first post really this type of soundcard is the buggiest with NWN's since they've even warned about it in the Readme file but even with my own I get the same shit every now and then. [ 05-29-2003, 12:51 AM: Message edited by: SpiritWarrior ]
