Just wondering if I can install and run W&W under WinXP?

Thanks!

It installs OK but you can expect a couple of problems that also occur with Win 2000. Be prepared to run the Virtualdub modification of the town AVI files; you may encounter difficulties with the "carry" ability; and you may need to tweak the graphics setup.

Thanks for the tips...is there anything else I should be concerned about doing? I have upgraded to WinXP Pro (OEM version) and would like to pick up where I had left off a few months ago. Since I switched systems I backed up the Save folder and the Save graphics. Is there anything else that I need to move over in order to retrieve my saved games?

Any other problems with WinXP? Can someone expand on the issue with the carry bug in Win2k/WinXP and the graphics tweaks mentioned above? I am using a GeForce3 if it makes a difference...

Thanks everyone!

Possibly you need to import ROSTER.DAT as well. If your game doesn't work, try doing that and see if it helps.

I think Mark (Skywalker) posted a thread recently about an unofficial patch that fixes graphic problems. I don't know if it works under XP, though. I'll see if I can find the topic for you and bump it up.

Just installed W&W on the shipping version of Windows XP. I loaded the Heuristic patch and the unofficial hi-res patch for my Radeon card.

I also set up a shortcut on the desktop and set the WinXP Compatibility Mode to Windows 95. I have not had the "Crash to Desktop when Carrying" problem and I can now run in super hi-res hardware mode (1280x1024).

I encountered the Town AVI problem and fixed it with Virtualdub. Also, the mouse seems a bit sluggish but I've had no other problems, so far.

Hi Xignal,

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me where you found the high-res patch? Does such a thing exist for the GeForce3 cards?

Thanks!

You can get the file here. The docs in the executable say it may work for other hi-res 3D cards. Let us know if it works for your system. Note: it modifies the deep6.exe directly (so back that file up beforehand) and it also requires that the Heuristic patch be installed first.

With all of the questions that have come up about W&W and Windows XP I decided to consolidate the info and add a new page to my site. It covers the Town AVI bug, Compatibility Mode, and installation of the Heuristic and Radeon/3D patches. Here's the link.

Thanks Xignal!

BTW, does one have to use Win95 compatibility mode or can you also use Win98? Is there a difference that you know of?

I have done everything except tried the high-res patch and it all works great! I have a GF3, so I may forego the high-res patch unless you would like to know if it works or not. I can test it if you like.
