I'll always remember this documentary I watched about this one Algerian guy, presumably one of those referred to in the article. It's so easy to just dismiss them as numbers though.

He'd been married to an American for over ten years (might have been 15 years) and was running his own restaurant. After September 11th, the FBI turned up and took him away with no explanation.

A year and a half later he was released, without having once been told what the charges were or what evidence there was against him. His wife and family were also given no information. In the time he was gone his restaurant had gone bust and his family had to sell the house and move because they could no longer pay the mortgage.

Ashcroft ruined the lives of normal American citizens just trying to live the so-called American dream. Now it looks like this new guy will be even better at it. I feel for our friends across the pond.

The sweet air of freedom is always here for those who fancy emigrating

Well, at least the recent Supreme Court cases clarify that they all get their day in court.

Erm... until the next law is passed, and we once again have to wait 2 years for a case to filter through the courts and allow the Supreme Court to smack it down, once again saying "That's obviously unconstitutional, you imbeciles."

Question Mark

Quote:
from the article:
Indeed, Gonzales provided the legal arguments used to claim that the president has the power, under the Constitution, to order torture....

Indeed, Gonzales deemed international law...to be "quaint" and outdated when applied to the war on terrorism. To say this, is to say, in effect that the Constitution itself is quaint and outdated.

Unsurprisingly, Gonzales -- like Ashcroft -- has been a strong supporter of the Patriot Act....

Gonzales, like Ashcroft, believes that the president's -- and attorney general's -- kingly power trumps even some of the most prized of American's basic rights, the rights to physical liberty, and to due process of law.
These are examples of some of the "domestic issues" that we need to face, as I state in another thread.

It makes you wonder who our real enemies are....

That's my take on Gonzales and Ashcroft in this context too Azred.

A weblog by one of the editors of The Nation refers to Gonzales only as "Torture Guy". It'd be funny if his views weren't in such blatant violation of everything I'd like our country to stand for.
