Well it is all a question of where you stand. If you are evil, then killing him off and taking his gear wont hurt your morals. But being "good" is has got to do with moral, not reputation. A good person would always act "right" even if it means a dent to their reputation. Alignment and reputation is NOT the same. That is one reason I don't understand why evil characters get mad when you got a high reputation, a high reputation is ideal to hide behind while commiting acts of evil(just look at the politicians).
I would say attacking him if you are a good character will be to go against your own morals. Only liberals who got that "surival of the fittest" "to the winner goes the spoils" thing going think like that.

The answer to you rep comment is that in bgI your rep goes up if you do the "moral" thing and down if you do the "unmoral" thing. With morals being good morals only. Since even evil have morals they are just different. However youare correct in a non bg setting that evil coul dahve high reps.
